Job Title: Clinical Skills Practitioner

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Skills Practitioner to join our medical education team at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive Clinical Skills Service to the Trust and King's College London Medical Students. This will involve maintaining, developing, and enhancing the quality of our departmental teaching programmes for medical students from Year 2 to Year 5.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Work with Consultants and Education Fellows to facilitate the educational needs of medical undergraduate students during their placement.
  2. Organise and deliver tutorials in response to identified needs.
  3. Support medical undergraduates in their experience of clinical situations and facilitate their learning of relevant clinical skills, knowledge, and attitude.
  4. Provide an ongoing review of the effectiveness of the clinical skills component of the courses.
  5. Work as an autonomous practitioner to ensure clinical skills are maintained and developed, and provide further scope for medical student training on the shop floor.
  6. Clinical Practice ability will include; competence to deliver and teach excellent clinical care within multiple specialties including interpretation of diagnostic information.
  7. Management of emergencies and taking appropriate action plan, develop, implement, teach, and evaluate a programme of clinical skills training ensuring appropriate access for all multidisciplinary staff with the Clinical Skills.
  8. Ensure that all clinical skills training is conducted according to current national and international recommendations.
  9. Be able to work independently and autonomously, managing own workload, prioritising activities, and ensuring the needs of the service are met.
  10. Maintain accurate records of clinical assessments and interventions.
  11. Manage own time effectively at all times including a balance between Clinical Skills and clinical work in the Trust.
  12. Be responsible for the provision and maintenance of sufficient equipment for clinical training ensuring compatibility of the equipment to that available in the various clinical areas of the Trust.
  13. Carry out audit, produce reports as requested, and carry out other administrative activities relevant to the post as well as maintain the security of the Skills Laboratory at all times.
  14. Maintain accurate records of attendance at Courses and Clinical Skills Training including candidate bookings, trainer bookings, room bookings, as well as candidate and trainer attendance.
  15. Be an Educational Supervisor (ES) for students in any year group and sign off skills in e-portfolio.

Provide specialist advice to effectively communicate with a wide range of people in a manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture, and background to explore complex issues and to make complex decisions.

  1. Be able to provide surgical and simulation teaching to different specialties and year blocks.
  2. Support postgraduate teaching if required (e.g., tracheostomy, blood cultures).
  3. Maintain a presence in the clinical areas by working alongside colleagues and medical students to role model and facilitate excellent clinical practice.
  4. Maintain the confidentiality of exam scripts during OSCEs.
  5. Support teaching as required for University of Nicosia medical students.
