Corrections Officer

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Corrections Officer to join our team as a Canine Handler. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong commitment to public safety and the well-being of our offenders.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct security operations utilizing trained canines to ensure the safe and secure confinement of offenders.
- Supervise the daily activities of offenders, observing and recording their behavior and movement to prevent escape and maintain order.
- Provide security services to adult supervisees at the institution and during transport, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Exercise and care for assigned canines, maintaining their readiness and training to ensure optimal performance.
- Prepare reports and maintain logs to document activities and incidents.
- Testify in court or hearings as necessary to provide evidence and support.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Certification as a Corrections Officer by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
- Knowledge of Department of Corrections policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to train and handle canines.
- Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and prepare reports and documentation using a computer.
- Formal experience or education in training and caring for canines.
This is a long-term post assignment offering a $2,400 pay supplement to those who successfully complete all required training.
