Position Overview

This advanced fellowship opportunity within the Cardiothoracic Transplant Unit at Royal Papworth Hospital is designed for a respiratory physician seeking specialized training in the management of severe respiratory failure and cardiothoracic transplantation.

The selected candidate will collaborate with a team of experienced consultant lung transplant physicians and a rotating respiratory trainee, contributing to a comprehensive transplant care team. This role will encompass both outpatient and inpatient medical management for patients experiencing respiratory failure and those undergoing transplantation, including providing critical care support.

The fellow will gain proficiency in evaluating ambulatory patients with complex respiratory conditions, including the selection process for lung and multi-organ transplant candidates, as well as managing inotropic and ECMO support. Additionally, the fellow will acquire skills in the post-transplant care of patients, including the administration of immunosuppressive therapies, and will learn to perform transbronchial biopsies and other endobronchial procedures. There will also be opportunities to engage in research initiatives, conduct audits, and explore other respiratory sub-specialties beyond transplantation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Provide patient care management under the guidance of specialty consultants.

2. Familiarize with and adhere to clinical protocols relevant to the specialty.

3. Maintain accurate medical records, including patient notes and discharge summaries.

4. Attend and participate in clinics, bronchoscopy sessions, ward rounds, and clinical meetings as necessary.

5. Engage actively in ward rounds.

6. Offer medical advice to external healthcare teams and community patients.

7. Seek guidance from senior colleagues as needed, based on skill level and knowledge.

8. Perform procedures under direct or indirect supervision.

9. Participate in clinical audits and maintain relevant medical audit documentation.

10. Contribute to the education of junior medical staff, undergraduate students, and non-medical personnel through regular teaching sessions.

11. Engage in clinical and/or laboratory research as directed by consultant staff.

12. Comply with clinical protocols of the specialty/hospital and support innovative practices for effective patient care delivery.

13. Participate in training activities, maintaining a log/portfolio and personal development plan.

14. Attend mandatory training sessions.
