Job Overview

Seeking a Clinical Psychologist or equivalent preceptorship role (band 7/8a) within a dynamic Medical Psychology Department.

We invite applications from dedicated and passionate Clinical/Counselling Psychologists to become part of our established Medical Psychology Department, offering up to seven sessions a week (three and a half days).

The primary location for this role will be at the Leicester General Hospital, with additional responsibilities at Leicester Royal Infirmary and occasional travel to other regional hospitals. This position involves contributing to the haemoglobinopathy service, working alongside a skilled team of clinical psychologists, assistants, and robust administrative support. Our department maintains strong connections with the Leicester Clinical Psychology Doctorate, providing numerous placement opportunities and avenues for teaching.

Leicester is a vibrant, multicultural city known for its rich arts and sports facilities, with excellent transport links to major cities and easy access to beautiful countryside.

This established service has recently received additional funding to enhance psychological services, including one session dedicated to the General Medical Team, allowing for broader collaboration and generic work opportunities. (For those seeking additional hours, there are often chances to take on bank sessions within the department).

Key Responsibilities

The haemoglobinopathy service is eager to expand its psychological offerings, recognizing the importance of psychological contributions to patient care.

As a Clinical Psychologist, you will work under the guidance of a band 8b psychologist, helping to further integrate psychology within the multidisciplinary team while being part of a dedicated psychology department.

Your role will involve specialized assessment and intervention for patients with sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, and rare anaemias, collaborating with MDT colleagues, and participating in annual review clinics. There may also be opportunities for inpatient work, involvement in ward rounds, and staff training.

The department fosters collaborative efforts, training, and supervision, being affiliated with one of the largest acute trusts in the country. We pride ourselves on a friendly, supportive, and flexible environment, emphasizing supervision and personal development through our psychology department. Regular meetings for case presentations, clinical governance, and business discussions are held, along with monthly peer group sessions and dedicated time for reflection and service enhancement.
