Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a dedicated Community Pediatric Nurse to become part of a well-established team in Birmingham. This city-wide initiative provides specialized nursing assistance to children and families facing a range of intricate health challenges, delivering clinical interventions in various community settings, including homes and educational institutions. The service operates throughout the week and includes an out-of-hours support system.

Key Responsibilities

As a proficient Children's Nurse with strong clinical expertise and advanced communication skills, you may be the ideal candidate to enhance our dynamic team. This role offers the chance to cultivate meaningful therapeutic relationships with children and families in a community environment.

Core Duties Include:

  • Adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Practice and maintaining accountability for all professional activities.
  • Delivering comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to children in their homes and other community environments.
  • Ensuring the assessment, planning, and delivery of holistic care meets the highest standards using an established nursing model.
  • Collaborating with children, families, and caregivers to achieve optimal outcomes while respecting personal preferences and lifestyles.
  • Coordinating with acute services, primary healthcare teams, and other organizations to develop and implement care plans.
  • Leading clinical care packages funded by the Community Complex Care team when assigned to the Community Children's Nursing caseload.
  • Providing health education to children, families, and caregivers to promote healthy living through various health initiatives.
  • Planning and conducting educational sessions for families and caregivers to ensure the delivery of evidence-based care.
  • Reporting any concerns regarding patient care to the Team Leader, Clinical Lead, or Service Manager.
  • Conducting home visits to children registered with local GPs as necessary.
  • Performing risk assessments for home visits to ensure safety, particularly during unsociable hours.
  • Obtaining informed consent from children, parents, and caregivers prior to providing care.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely records in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Being accountable for nursing practice and all related activities.
  • Providing a flexible service to adapt to the working environment.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN) or Registered Nurse (RN) Child Branch.
  • ENB 998 (Teaching & Assessing in Clinical Practice) or equivalent qualification.
  • Community Children's Nursing qualification or equivalent.

Desirable:

  • Experience in Children's Palliative Care.
  • Independent supplementary prescriber or equivalent qualification.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to manage the team effectively in the absence of the Team Leader.
  • Knowledge of child protection issues and relevant procedures.
  • Demonstrated assessment skills and application of nursing processes.
  • Understanding of the NMC Code of Conduct and scope of professional care.
  • Awareness of current legislative changes affecting healthcare services.
  • Knowledge of clinical trends and practices, including evidence-based approaches in Children's Community Nursing.
  • Ability to teach patients, families, and staff across various areas of self-care and nursing practice.
  • Familiarity with standard-setting and audit processes.
  • Commitment to health and safety responsibilities.
  • Strong written communication skills that are clear and accurate.
  • Awareness of the diverse needs of families concerning culture and religion.
  • Evidence of effective time and resource management.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
