London, United Kingdom King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time

An exciting opportunity has risen for a clinical fellow to strengthen the clinical and academic hepatology service between University Hospital Lewisham and Kings College Hospital (KCH) This post would suit an individual with specialty experience in gastroenterology/hepatology, ST3+ or equivalent. This is a 1 year fixed term post.

This is a 1 year fixed term contract The post holder will be required to support the wider team at both University Hospital Lewisham and King's College Hospital.

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching Trusts with a turnover of c£1 billion, 1.5 million patient contacts a year and around 14,000 staff based across 5 main sites in South East London. The Trust provides a full range of local hospital services across its different sites, and specialist services from King’s College Hospital (KCH) sites at Denmark Hill in Camberwell and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in Bromley.

King’s is committed to delivering Sustainable Healthcare for All via our Green Plan. In line with national Greener NHS ambitions, we have set net zero carbon targets of 2040 for our NHS Carbon Footprint and 2045 for our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus. Everyone’s contribution is required in order to meet the goals set out in our Green Plan and we encourage all staff to work responsibly, minimising their contributions to the Trust’s carbon emissions, waste and pollution wherever possible.

The trust-wide strategy Strong Roots, Global Reach is our Vision to be BOLD, Brilliant people, Outstanding care, Leaders in Research, Innovation and Education, Diversity, Equality and Inclusion at the heart of everything we do. By being person-centred, digitally-enabled, and focused on sustainability, we can take Team King’s to another level.

The post holder will be based mainly at Lewisham to deliver aspects of the Hepatitis Operational Delivery Network King’s College Hospital as part of the Hepatology Hepatitis team and will be involved in delivering high standard clinical care within Hepatitis clinical trials. The diverse patient population attending Lewisham & Kings Liver clinics also offers an excellent opportunity to undertake translational Hepatitis research projects or quality improvement initiatives. Our local London boroughs have some of the highest rates of chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection England.

Since June 2023, the emergency department at Lewisham has provided opt-out testing for hepatitis B and C, in addition to HIV. The challenge now lies in linkage to care, ensuring patients diagnosed have access to treatment and monitoring. The hepatology service is also part of the Southeast London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) and NHS England have recently prioritised the early diagnosis of liver cancer, with a focus on identifying patients with cirrhosis who require surveillance. The opportunity has therefore arisen via the ODN to appoint a new clinical fellow to support regional work in both areas, primarily based at Lewisham. There will be a strong focus on management and leadership, with opportunity to be involved at a regional level with quality improvement projects.
