We are looking for an enthusiastic capable fellow to join our fantastic Hepatology team at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

This appointment is an excellent opportunity to gain experience of clinical research in a leading research organisation. The Clinical Research Fellow will work with a dynamic group of clinicians and scientists engaged in evaluating novel therapeutics for alcoholic hepatitis and other liver diseases. This is a 12 months fixed term post, however due to the importance of the work, there is scope for this role to be extended in the new financial year.

The activity within the Unit will support training in drug development, study design, pharmacovigilance, project management, and conduct of clinical trials, as well as regulatory aspects of clinical experimentation.

The post holder will also be expected to undertake some clinical duties, to provide cross cover for colleagues where appropriate, to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, staff training, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs, Grand Rounds etc.

The primary role is to provide medical support for Hepatology Clinical Trials. The studies will be delivered within the Hepatology Clinical Research Facility and on the inpatient wards at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post holder will work directly with experienced senior researchers supporting the implementation of patient-based clinical trials in an established clinical academic environment that benefits from both on-site acute medical services and experienced administrative support. The postholder will also attend regular Hepatology clinics at both the St Mary’s and Hammersmith Site to facilitate recruitment to clinical studies and gain further experience in the multi-disciplinary management of Hepatology patients.

The post holder will work closely with other members of the Hepatology and Research team to ensure the continuation of expert clinical research. They will work closely with the appropriate clinical management teams to:

- Support the timely delivery of clinical studies, in-line with the requirements of sponsors, GCP (Good Clinical Practise), and other appropriate guidelines and regulations
- Provide medical assessment and cover for selected studies in the Hepatology CRF working alongside other clinical teams
- Perform clinical procedures as appropriate to the assigned study (including, but not limited to, clinical examinations or testing, insertion of intravenous lines, assessment of adverse events and management of medical emergencies)
- Ensure that patients/volunteers in assigned studies give fully informed consent in writing before commencing a study
- Assess and interpret safety and clinical data from assigned studies, e.g. vital signs, ECG's, laboratory tests, adverse events etc.
- Follow up and report adverse events as necessary. Communicate safety issues to the Principal Investigator for a study, report Serious Adverse Events in accordance with Good Clinical Practice

The General responsibilities of the post holder are as follows:

- Accept delegated responsibility to ensure that assigned studies in the Hepatology CRF are carried out safely and in compliance with the protocol
- Evaluate and manage acute, sub-acute and chronic adverse drug reactions and manage acute toxicological emergencies under the supervision of the consultants in charge
- Review study documentation and complete appropriate sections of Case Report Forms
- To participate in the educational activities of the department.
