Job summary

The Hepatology Unit is part of the Gastroenterology Department, which sits within the Gastrointestinal Medicine and Surgery (GMS) Directorate, along Upper GI, Colorectal and Emergency General Surgery.

The Department of Gastroenterology serves the general gastrointestinal needs of the local population and the specific needs of particular groups for the region and beyond. Guy's and St Thomas' Trust is a Cancer Centre for upper gastrointestinal cancers, head and neck cancers and, in conjunction with King's College Hospital (KCH), pancreatic and biliary cancer. The Department has particular interests in inflammatory bowel disease, interventional pancreato-biliary endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, oesophageal, gastric and colonic interventional endoscopy, liver disease, oesophageal physiology and nutrition. The liver unit has grown steadily over the last years and has recently achieved national accreditation for the quality its service. It is currently run by 5 substantive and one locum consultant and is challenged by a steady increase of the number of routine and urgent referrals.

Main duties of the job

The aim of this post is to provide high quality provision of care for the increasing number of patients with liver and biliary disease referred to GSTT and needing outpatient or inpatient assessment. Support to the general needs of the Endoscopy Unit is also an integral part of this post. In addition, the post holder is expected to offer senior clinical support to the hepatology multidisciplinary team. He/she will also have a key role in leading the training of specialist registrars and fellows as well as other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Hepatology job role also includes significant component of community Hepatology which includes clinics and MDTs in community.

Post holder is expected to have a full colonoscopy sign off prior to starting in this post.

This job has a GIM component which includes weekend on call, twilight on call and post take ward rounds.

There is an 8-weekend day commitment which includes provision of endoscopy/GIM

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training:

Essential

MBBS (or equivalent) Registered with GMC and hold a licence to practise MRCP or equivalent Completed specialist training in gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT date)

Desirable

Higher degree (MD, PhD)

Clinical Experience:

Essential

Comprehensive clinical experience in all aspects of Gastroenterology Documented experience in hepatology (at least 6 months)

Desirable

Broad ranging experience in tertiary hepatology unit

Knowledge and Skills:

Essential

Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team Fully competent in upper GI, lower GI endoscopy with documentation of performance indicators Fully competent in the assessment of hepatitis B and C

Desirable

Documented experience and ability to perform advanced therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopic management of portal hypertension, or abdominal ultrasound.

Management:

Essential

Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management Documented experience in leading quality improvement Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management Attendance at leadership and management course
