**Authority Context**

**The Role**

The Climate Change Projects Officer role is an exciting, varied and hands-on role dedicated to the development and delivery of projects which help reduce carbon and increase resilience to the impacts of climate change in Merton. This role sits within Merton’s climate team but will also work in a cross-cutting and collegiate way with colleagues across the council including our facilities management, fleet management, greenspaces and public health teams. You will work as part of a large, friendly regeneration team including highways, planning, urban design, flood risk and economic development, with opportunities for development and growth in skills and experience across different disciplines.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Council and external partners such as Merton’s Climate Action Group, housing providers, schools, and community groups to develop and deliver projects which promote carbon reduction and climate adaptation across the borough of Merton. Projects will cut across the four key themes of Merton’s Climate Strategy & Action Plan (Buildings & Energy, Transport, Green Economy and Greening Merton).
- Collaborating with Merton’s established schools climate network to support local schools on their journey to net zero carbon.
- Supporting climate communications and engagement with residents, businesses, schools, community groups and organisations to encourage sustainable behaviour change and the transition to a low carbon economy.
- Supporting colleagues across the council and external stakeholders with upgrading the council's estate, fleet and procured services towards the Council’s 2030 net zero target.
- Helping to implement ambitious local climate change policies by reviewing and providing technical comments on energy statements for new developments in the borough, working as part of a wider team.
- Actively supporting community-led climate action projects through Merton’s Climate Action Group and other community groups.
- Working with retrofit, planning and historic conservation officers on developing planning guidance to help residents retrofit their homes.

**Essential Skills**

Essential skills are proactivity, strong communication skills and project delivery, ideally in the context of climate change and achieving net zero.
