**Job description**:
The Department for Transport (DfT) works with our agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK’s businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We have an ambitious programme for investment in transport infrastructure across the country to keep the UK on the move, to level up our regions, decarbonise the way we travel and recover from the recent pandemic.

The Transport Infrastructure Planning Casework Unit (TIPCU) is a team made up of the Transport Infrastructure Planning Unit (TIPU) and the National Transport Casework Team (NCTC) totalling a team of around 30 people split between London, Birmingham, Leeds and Newcastle, and forms part of a new consolidated Planning, Transport and Housing Division.- Planning Act 2008 on Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP), such as development of strategic roads, aviation and major harbour projects;
- Transport and Works Act 1992 (TWA) for development of major sections of railways or tramways; and
- Highways Act (1980), the Town and Country Planning Act (1990) and the Road Traffic Regulations Act (1984).

**Roles and Responsibilities**

**_ Your key duties and responsibilities will include:_**
- Jointly lead and develop a diverse team across multiple location (along with the other Joint Head of Transport Infrastructure Planning Casework) a team of 30+ undertaking the Department’s statutory casework function ensuring timely decision making that is robust and legally defensible.
- Seek to continuously improve the caseload process without a diminution in quality of advice or legally robust decision making. Develop practicable measures to improve efficiency through changes to office practice, guidance and legislation as appropriate.
- To champion DfT’s interests in the planning system and resolving cross-cutting delivery issues in liaison with other Government Departments such as DLUHC, Defra, DESNZ and the Planning Inspectorate.

**About you**

You will display excellent verbal and written communication skills, who is able to simplify complex information and present persuasively at senior levels, as well as an being an excellent decision maker with the ability to see the strategic connections between issues and recommend the right decisions in a political environment. You confidently build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Your expertise includes analysing complex reports to ensure they are legal and policy-compliant, as well as dealing with legislation, such as planning, transport, and environmental law.

**Further information**:
You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. If based in Leeds or Birmingham, occasional travel to our London office will be required for key meetings and team events.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
