About us
The Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) is part of the
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), and is responsible for the environmental
and decommissioning regulatory regime of offshore energy projects. We have a wide range of
responsibilities, including handling domestic and international policy relating to the
development of the environmental regulatory framework for offshore energy projects.

Our Regional Delivery Programmes focus on developing, administering and ensuring compliance
with the environmental and decommissioning regulatory regime, and the programme’s Environmental
Management Team (EMT) is responsible for the environmental assessment and approval of offshore
energy projects across three regional areas of the UK continental shelf.

What you’ll do

in relation to offshore energy activities, and provide technical leadership to the Regional
Delivery Programme atmospheric function, which focuses on issues such as the UK Emissions
Trading Scheme, Net Zero and the PPC Regulations. You’ll also liaise closely with the Offshore
Inspectorate Technical Lead and colleagues within OPRED's decommissioning team and offer
support relating to a number of domestic and international initiatives on environmental matters
relating to offshore energy industries. These include developing and amending policy,
particularly in relation to regulations, guidance or procedures.

But your work won’t stop here - you’ll represent and influence OPRED’s views in various
domestic and international environmental fora, support our Policy Hub in relation to policy
development and strategic direction on technical policy, regulation and operational matters,
and liaise with other government departments, public bodies, devolved administrations, industry
bodies and NGOs.

We’ll also expect you to provide technical input in relation to the performance management
process for our Environmental Management Team’s technical staff, and contribute to the
production and updating of the annual Unit and Team business plans. In addition, you’ll
undertake and support technical and administrative recruitment exercises, and assist with the
development and implementation of fee charging schemes.

What do I need?

To be a success in this role you’ll have an honours degree or its equivalent, or a
post-graduate qualification in Climate and Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science,
Environmental Management, Environmental Pollution, Marine Resource Development and Protection,
Biology, Bioscience, Marine Biology, Microbiology or Zoology. You’ll also have well developed
knowledge and experience in relation to environmental protection, operational delivery and
legislation relevant to the offshore energy sector. Previous practical working experience of
the oil and gas industry experience would be an advantage.

As you’ll be working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, you should have
superb written and verbal communication skills, and we’ll also expect you to be a motivating
and collaborative colleague and team worker.

What are the benefits?

You’ll benefit from a culture that embraces difference and includes everyone, where you’ll feel
supported and trusted to do the right thing. We’ll invest in you and allow you to grow and
shape your career. What’s more, working with us entitles you to a competitive mix of benefits
including a Civil Service pension, extensive learning and development opportunities, and
flexible working.

As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve. To achieve this we welcome
