As the national laboratory for nuclear fission in the UK, we are harnessing nuclear science to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.

The Immobilisation Science & Technology team based at Workington, in Cumbria are looking for a post-doctoral level Chemist or Materials Scientist to join the team. Our work focusses on research and development of encapsulation processes using cementation technology. This includes technical support to encapsulation plants and researching alternative encapsulants.

**To join the NNL Post Doctorate programme you will have a PhD in Chemistry or Materials Science and have experience of working within a laboratory or rig hall based environment. It would also be beneficial to have an understanding of encapsulation technologies**

**You will have the right to work in the UK and be able to achieve BPSS level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment and criminal record checks).**

You will be based in Workington, Cumbria.

Main Responsibilities

You will already have experience of working within a laboratory or rig hall based environment and it would also be beneficial to have an understanding of encapsulation technologies.
This role will involve working closely with Technical Leads and Technicians in the team and will require interaction with a range of internal and external customers as such strong interpersonal skills are needed. In addition, you should self-motivated, organised and able to plan and manage your own time.

You will be responsible for:

- The development and delivery of experimental work programmes in our non-active laboratories and rig hall
- The collection, analysis, interpretation and presenting of experimental data
- Writing of technical reports, memos and presentations for our customers
- Interfacing with customers
- Working alongside project/programme managers and customers to ensure that work is delivered to time, cost, quality and safety requirements
- Providing support to develop the skills and abilities of other team members
- Ensuring all relevant safety rules and procedures are applied
- The management of activities within a technical project and ensuring progress aligns with agreed timescales.

Your two-year scheme will provide the opportunity to develop your technical knowledge and skills whilst providing you with an insight into NNL’s strategy and direction. You will receive an overview of how the company operates and delivers its projects.

You will undertake personal development through training aligned to your personal development plan and understand your strengths, weaknesses, and behaviours. You will receive a personal budget to support your development within your field of expertise.

From day one you’ll have a role in a technical team involved in delivering real customer projects. You will have direct sight of the value that your skills and knowledge have to our industry and by extension our society. The Postdoctoral Development Scheme runs alongside your role, providing you the space and skills to develop in a commercial environment whilst helping you decide how to advance your technical expertise.
