**About the group**

Fiscal Group works on a wide-ranging and exciting set of issues which are at the heart of the Treasury’s objectives. We are responsible for ensuring the sustainability of the government’s finances - over both the medium and long term - to support economic stability and growth. This means making sure that the government has enough revenue to meet its spending commitments. Work in this area includes advising the Chancellor on the appropriate levels of borrowing and debt, overseeing financing raised for the government by the Debt Management Office and National Savings & Investments, and managing the daily flow of cash across the public sector.

**About the team**

The Debt & Reserves Management (DRM) team handles key financial assets and liabilities on the public sector balance sheet. We use analysis, oversight, and our partner links to Bank of England, the UK Debt Management Office (DMO), National Savings & Investments (NS&I), and the Royal Mint. The team also acts as a centre of excellence on financial markets, including the relationship between financial sector policy and managing the public finances and the economy.

The Debt Liabilities branch leads on debt and cash management policy in DRM, to ensure that the government can finance itself in a smooth and cost-effective manner. We work closely with the DMO who are the Treasury’s agent in fixed income markets, who are also responsible for all operational matters relating to market issuance of government debt.

Over the year, we provide policy advice to Ministers on government bond (gilt) issuance and the portfolio of debt liabilities, lead the team’s inputs at fiscal events (including publishing the annual Debt management report and Budget Annexes), and monitor activity in bond markets to inform policy development. We also contribute to wider assessments of cross-government policy initiatives on the UK’s debt portfolio. We are the sponsor branch for the DMO, leading work such as DMO public appointments and ongoing DMO recruitment, retention and remuneration.

DRM are a friendly and supportive team of around 30 people, including some of the team who are based in Darlington.
