Job Scope:
The Royal Society is seeking an enthusiastic experienced professional to join its Education Policy Team as an experienced Policy Adviser, within the Society’s Science Policy section.

Ideally, the post holder will be expected to understand the education landscape and current major areas of education or skills policy interests in England and the rest of the UK. Alternatively, they may have equivalent policy experience in a related area. The post holder will necessarily be able to operate with mínimal supervision and be able to take responsibility for their own projects, for example managing a project steering group made up of senior external experts and talking to key government officials.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Fellowship of the Royal Society and other high-level stakeholders on ensuring the governance of the Society’s education work is robust, including through leading the secretariat to the Royal Society Education Committee.

This role involves working within a team of ten staff, including a Head of Policy and three Senior Policy Advisers, within a section of 45 Science Policy colleagues and working closely with Communications, Public Affairs, Public Engagement, International Affairs and Diversity & Industry Programme teams. Activities are undertaken by a team of Senior Policy Advisers and Policy Advisers who work across a range of themes and policy issues, according to priorities and their own expertise.

The Society’s partners include other academies, learned societies, funding agencies, government, industry, charitable bodies, businesses and the public sector.

The Royal Society’s fundamental purpose, reflected in its founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity.

The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK, dedicated to promoting excellence in science. It is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering and medicine.

**Location**: Carlton House Terrace, London, plus hybrid working

**Hours**: 35 hours per week, full time

**Pay Band**: D

**Salary**: £35,931- £44,913

**Responsibilities**:

- Leading and delivering projects within education and skills related public policy issues working with a senior policy adviser. This includes:

- Using knowledge of education and skills together with analytical skills to create policy positions.
- To develop expertise within the Society around technical and vocational education and training policy.
- Keeping up-to-date with education, science and policy developments in the UK and be able to spot opportunities for deployment of that knowledge.
- Creating programmes and project plans, working within a working group setting and ensuring good decisions can be made and ensuring those are followed through on.
- Coordinating the programme content, papers and agenda to ensure smooth running of Education Committee meetings on a rolling basis (3 per year)
- Creating policy briefings and reports cradle to grave and ensuring impact on delivery.
- Ensuring internal and external policy-related events are delivered to a high standard. This involves liaising with the Society’s internal conferencing and events section as well as ensuring admin and finance are carried out to a high standard.
- Continuing to expand the network of academics and policy makers to ensure a good network of contacts.
- Under the leadership of a Senior Policy Adviser be agile to run emerging projects and where necessary acting as their deputy.
- Undertaking other duties commensurate with the post such as contributing to horizon-scanning for other sub-teams.
- Build effective working relationships with colleagues and Fellows.
- Building national networks of contacts with policymakers, educationalists, scientists and other stakeholders at his/her own and at a higher level of seniority.
- Representing the Society and its policy positions in meetings with government, policymakers and others.
- Contributing to other activities within the Royal Society as required.
