**Job summary**:
Taking action to address economic coercion, to defend UK businesses and protect our security is a priority for the UK Government. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Policy Adviser to help shape the UK’s domestic and international response.

The postholder will play a critical role in helping to develop our approach to economic coercion. The role will involve working with relevant policy teams within DIT, across Whitehall and at Post, to develop, coordinate and implement policy and strategy to tackle the threat of economic coercion to the UK and its businesses.

This is a high-profile role in a nascent policy area, which will provide ample opportunity for variety, development and stretch - from policy scoping to implementation. It will also be equally rewarding, sitting at the heart of some of the most interesting geopolitical and economic challenges of our time, with potentially far-reaching real-world impacts. It is interesting, challenging and important work that really matters to the UK.

**Job description**:
Our work on economic coercion will involve extensive cross-departmental engagement at all levels - coordinating with relevant policy and geographic teams within DIT, and ensuring this work is appropriately situated within/alongside other relevant cross-HMG workstreams and strategies.

As Policy Adviser, your key responsibilities will include:

- Development and delivery of economic coercion policy work.
- Building relationships across Government and engaging with key departments - in particular, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), HM Treasury and Cabinet Office.
- Driving forward evidence-based development of UK trade policy/trade defence and deterrence against economic coercion, including use of unilateral tools.
- Implementing DIT’s international economic coercion strategy, including engagement with partners/stakeholders in both bilateral and multilateral fora.
- Managing relationships with internal teams and co-ordinating work across DIT, working closely with economist/analytical/legal teams, as required.
- Supporting senior managers and Ministers, providing briefing and advice where needed.
- _The postholder will need to be flexible to take on new workstreams as they may evolve.

**Hybrid working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Experience of working in a policy role.
- Ability to communicate and influence effectively.
- Excellent personal organisation and ability to balance competing priorities.

**Desirable Criteria**

**Personal Attributes & Skills**
