You will provide leadership, independent oversight and assurance that the Children Young People and Learning directorate and its West Sussex partnerships meet their statutory functions, duties and responsibilities in terms of safeguarding, child protection and children in care and any other aspect within the remit of the service. You also have responsibility for managing the business unit of the West Sussex Safeguarding Children’s Partnership (WSSCP) and are the lead officer for WSCC in developing multi-agency working arrangements via the WSSCP.

The Head of Safeguarding will facilitate improvements in the quality and provision of services that ensure safeguarding functions and statutory duties are met by the statutory lead partners: WSCC, Sussex Police and NHS Sussex (Integrated Care Board) in collaboration with providers, strategic partnerships/boards, and regulators. The post holder will ensure that safeguarding policy and guidance across the system are understood and underpinned by primary legislation, local and Government strategies.

You will support practice development and promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement through a range of activities, initiatives and programmes with individual professionals, teams, services and jointly with partners and service users. You will oversee the business of the WSSCP, providing support to the Independent Chair and Scrutineer, expert advice, guidance and support to CYPS senior leaders in relation to safeguarding and partnership matters. This role operates within the context of both the activities of the Council and also with key safeguarding partners across both West Sussex and the South East region. The post holder will take a lead on WSSCP sub-groups.

You will also be responsible for the leadership of the Children’s Mental and Emotional Health Team, strengthening knowledge, practice and relationships across the partnership in respect of children’s emotional wellbeing and mental health.

- Competent in the use of IT.

**Qualifications and/or experience**:

- Professional qualification or equivalent experience, relevant to the delivery of safeguarding children and child protection services.
- Registration with Social Work England.
- Post qualifying qualifications (e.g. leadership/management qualifications).
- Evidence of working in social care, education, health agencies, police or other partners.
- Extensive, sophisticated and up to date knowledge of relevant national and local policy, statutory guidance and legislation in relation to safeguarding children and provision of services.
