Group Head of Design

**What you'll be doing?**:
Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function - Barratt Partnerships.
While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
Reporting to the Group Design & Technical Director, the primary role of the Group Design Director is to design and maintain our standard housetypes and apartments across both the Barratt and David Wilson brands which are suitable for the operating Divisions to use in England, Wales and Scotland.
These designs must be economic to construct, attractive to both purchasers and planning authorities and meet the needs of the business to maximise profits. There will be a continuous cycle of maintenance of designs, replacing and adding new designs but also ensuring that the house and apartment ranges are always at the cutting edge of design and will assist in the creation of strong placemaking in the communities that the Barratt business operate in.
You will:
- Ensure generally that the Barratt and David Wilson standard house and apartment designs are cutting edge in terms of design credentials including sharp, strong and versatile elevations to provide award winning street scenes and acceptable site layout coverage creating great places for our customers to live. The designs have to be best in industry.
- Ensure the standard house and apartment designs are on trend in terms of layout providing ergonomic plans which maximise opportunities for our customers including all room types furniture to a minimum standard, storage in line with house size expectations and maximising the available space.
- Be well versed in the requirements of NDSS and Approved Document M Cats 1, 2 and 3 as well as all other Building Regulations and Planning Requirements.
- Design and modify housetypes as required, both in response to instructions from the Line Manager and independently to meet perceived business needs, maximising floor space and ergonomics.
- Promote the standard product to the housebuilding Divisions, communicating the value of each design and take on board any constructive criticism for improvement from all internal functions as well as external customers.
- Assist in the operation of the HTV (housetype variation) system advising operating Divisions as to where they could improve their non-core proposals and where appropriate to offer a design service.
- Liaise with the internal Urban Design Team to facilitate site layout plotting best practice. This will include input to the different standard ranges of designs Plotting Books which are produced by the Urban Design Team. Also engage in the regular Site Layout Review process, joining the review team to regulatory critique early versions of site layout design.
- Provide support for our internal Great Places Placemaking initiative and become a member of the judging panel.
- Work with the in-house GDT Architectural Technician teams responsible for the production of full working drawing packs including third party information from suppliers.
- Work with the in-house GDT Innovation Team who are responsible for the sign-off of new building systems, products and technologies to ensure the house and apartment designs have the very best state-of-the-art technologies which comply with all relative legislation.
- Work with the in-house Biodiversity team to ensure that Biodiversity Net Gain is achieved on all developments where required.
- Work with in-house Group Procurement, Construction and Commercial teams on occasions to promote economic design, construction and appropriate specifications.
- Work with suppliers (i.e. kitchen manufacturers) to promote appropriate design solutions for the standard designs.
- Commission and oversee CGI images and sales/marketing material used to produce point of sale literature for all standard house and apartment designs.
- Protect, enhance and differentiate both the Barratt and David Wilson Homes brands averting any cross pollination.
- Attend and present at Group Function Meetings along with Regional and Divisional presentations.
**What you'll need?**:
To be successful in the role, we are looking for:
- An excellent design and placemaking knowledge
- Ability to communicate this effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
- A fluent design capability together with the ability to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team as well as on own initiative.
- Experience with AutoCAD/Revit and any other design software would be preferab
