**Collections Officer**

Reports to: Museum Director

Terms: Full Time Permanent role.

Salary Range from £29,000 to £31,000 depending on experience.

28 days annual leave per annum including Bank Holidays

5 days out of 7 to include some weekend working (expected to be one weekend in three).

Hours of work approximately 9 - 5 with very occasional evenings.

**Role purpose**

The Collections Officer will be responsible for the management, care and access of the museum’s collection. This role will play a key part of the management team inputting into strategic leadership across the site and will be included on the Duty Manager rota.

**Role Profile**
- _**To be responsible for the documentation and care of the collection in accordance with the Accreditation Standards and SPECTRUM procedures, including the introduction of MODES.**_

Lead the museums accreditation return, coordinating with the management team in gathering information.

Rationalise the collection in accordance with the Museum’s Collection Development Policy.

Develop and maintain Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) across collections, exhibition and storage environments.

Lead a conservation cleaning programme to ensure objects on display and in storage are regularly inspected, assessed and treated appropriately.

Oversee the cataloguing and documentation of new acquisitions.


Oversee research on the collection as required for documentation purposes.

Manage loan requests (in-going and out-going) and photographic reproduction agreements.

As part of the Museum Emergency Plan, develop and implement a salvage plan for collections.

Provide curatorial input into new and existing displays.

Provide items and stories from the collection to be shared online, on display or enhancing our visitor offer.

Oversee requests from visitors for access to records and information.

Organise the work and be responsible for all volunteers in the collections department, increasing capacity through training and active recruitment of volunteers with a focus on encouraging a diverse range of volunteers.

Work collaboratively with the management team in delivering the visitor offer, memorial and compliance aspects across the museum.

Develop partnerships with other organisations to facilitate fundraising opportunities, research and intern placements.

**Person Specification**

**Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience**:

- Experience of working with museum collections including knowledge of Spectrum 5.1 procedures and MODES or similar software.
- Excellent working knowledge of conservation, storage, security and insurance issues relating to collections
- Experience of delivering engaging museum displays
- Knowledge and an understanding of Arts Council accreditation standards and their fulfilment.
- Ability to organise, supervise, train and inspire volunteers
- Excellent organisational and planning skills to prioritise workload
- Ability to collaborate and work as part of a wider management team
- An interest in the work of the museum

**Desirable**:

- Experience of managing asbestos and radiation in a 20th century collection
- First Aid trained
- IOSH safety management system trained

The Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial is an independent museum and registered charity set up to advance the education of the public by providing an aviation museum and a memorial to the members of the allied air forces who served during WWII. The museum interprets and celebrates particularly, although not exclusively, Yorkshire as the birthplace of aviation and scores of wartime bases. The museum lies in the grounds of the original RAF Elvington WW2 aerodrome, just outside York.

The museum is accredited and has a collection of over 30,000 items and records, including a registered collection of artefacts and uniforms of national importance as well as 60 historic aircraft and vehicles. Established in the 1980s it extends to 20 acres, with both original wartime buildings and purpose-built units. Visitors enjoy a unique collection of aircraft, exhibitions, special events and live aircraft spanning the era from WW1 to the Cold War and beyond. It’s an exciting time at the museum, welcoming our highest numbers of visitors and progressing in all aspects of sustainability.

The Collections Officer is a new and important role at the museum. It will build on the work of the previously volunteer-run collections department to ensure continuing maintenance of accreditation standards, improved documentation processes, the introduction of MODES collection software and the development of digital capabilities. It is essential that we share the collection with visitors through updated exhibitions, responses to research requests, the production of online content and expanded availability for volunteering.
