Job description

Do you have experience of successfully delivering presentations, performances or demonstrations in an engaging way to a broad range of audiences? Do you want to inspire futures by providing live interpretation in our museum galleries?

**About Us**
- At the Science Museum Group STEM engagement is at the heart of what we do. We inform, inspire and encourage learning on-site, as well as through outreach and online. We ignite curiosity around STEM by assisting discovery through active participation and social interaction. We use the concept of science capital to shape our work and provide us with research-based insight into what influences and shapes people’s engagement with, and attitudes towards, science.

We are now recruiting for an Explainer to join our Learning Team based at the National Railway Museum in York. This is a part-time role working 18 hours per week and shifts will be on a 4-week rolling rota which includes regular weekend working.

**About the role**
- As an Explainer you will provide live interpretation in the museum galleries for all our visitors. You will deliver a wide-ranging and creative programme of activities and events for diverse audiences including schools, families, adults and community groups. You will reveal the wonder of science by telling authentic stories about our collection and facilitating and supporting the learning of children and adults.

Your role is to engage with visitors and help them learn from our exhibits and collection. You will support with and deliver all learning activities inside the Wonderlab Gallery, an interactive space that encourages and inspires our visitors to investigate with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

We provide opportunities for you to develop your skills through on-the-job training programmes in order to support you in delivering high quality learning experiences that are memorable and engaging for our large and diverse audiences.

**About you**
- First of all, you don’t need to be a science expert or have any particular qualifications in STEM. We are looking for you to have experience of working in a public-facing role using good customer service and communication skills. You will also be able to deliver presentations, performances or demonstrations.

Crucially, you will have experience of working with and communicating to a broad range of people, especially children and you will have the confidence to learn to perform or present to an audience and the ability to seek and learn from feedback.

**Applying**

**What we offer**
- Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We understand that work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we offer the perks listed below, as well as support for things that happen in life such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.
- Support with personal and professional development
- 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays
- Employee assistance programme
- Enhanced contributory pension
- Unmind App and other wellbeing support
- Interest-free loans
- Days Out discounts
- Health & Dental Insurance

**Open for All** is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to develop a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge, and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation, capable to continue to **Inspire Futures**.
