The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s Medieval Marvels. Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of York, it is open for public use as a fully functioning museum, wedding and hospitality venue and meeting place some 665 years after construction began in 1357. We are seeking to appoint a Part Time Hall Keeper (Caretaker/Key Holder) to work as part of a small and dedicated team in the care and upkeep of the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall as a museum, venue for hire and home to the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York.

**Hall Keeper (Caretaker position)**

**Part Time - £11.89 per hour Day/£16.64 per hour Evening**

**20 hours per week including weekends and evenings**

**To start week commencing 2nd January 2024**

**Job Title**: Hall Keeper

**Responsible to**: The Beadle

**Scope**: To work as part of a small and dedicated team in the care and upkeep of the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall as a museum, café, venue for hire and home to the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York.

**Overall Purpose of the Role**: A core team member bringing enthusiasm and hard work to all tasks ensuring that the Hall is clean and well-presented at all times whilst utilising organisational and interpersonal skills to deliver a first-rate visitor and client experience.

The Hall Keeper is responsible for:
**Maintenance and Cleanliness**

1. Keeping all public spaces, toilets, kitchens and office areas clean and free of litter.

2. To dispose of waste materials in a safe, hygienic manner ensuring that it is available for collection as required.

3. To carry out repairs e.g. unblocking wastes, changing tap washers, changing light bulbs, minor decorating and any other jobs as may be instructed by the Beadle.

4. Undertake general gardening tasks such as grass cutting, maintenance of flower beds, hedges and borders etc.

5. To ensure that gullies, drains etc. are kept free from debris and that the Hall and grounds are litter free.

**Security, Health & Safety**

1. To be responsible for maintaining the security of the premises and its contents in accordance with the Hall’s current requirements.

2. Opening and locking up of the Hall and grounds including gates and the external and internal doors.

3. To attend to, where necessary, personnel visiting the Hall, grounds and external properties such as contractors.

4. Be committed to good health, safety and access practice, ensuring familiarity and compliance with the Halls policies, procedures and guidelines including the Hall’s Health and Safety and Safeguarding Policy and ensuring the safety and welfare of visitors, staff, volunteers and contractors at all times.

5. Ensuring the safe and secure operations of the Hall during museum opening hours and during its use for private hire. Swiftly reporting all security issues or concerns to the appropriate person.

6. Managing and adhering to the Hall’s emergency procedures. Pro-actively implementing and ensuring all visitors are evacuated safely.

7. Respond to any first aid incidents, promptly alerting a first-aider and following the Hall’s accident reporting procedure

**Private Hire**

1. Working outside of normal hours on the security and safety of the Hall and its grounds during its use for private hire.

2. Ensuring adherence to Company Policy by clients and caterers.

3. Liaising with clients, caterers, external contractors and entertainment suppliers for the smooth and effective operation of out of hours events.

4. Setting up for events and clearing down afterwards as required. Including the movement of heavy and cumbersome items such as chairs, tables and other equipment.

5. To proactively welcome and engage with all clients during their time at the Hall.

**Admissions Desk and Coffee House**

1. To proactively welcome and engage with all visitors and Members of the Company as well as providing a welcoming and informed introduction to the Hall.

2. Keeping up to date with and sharing knowledge of the Hall, its collections, events, the museum facilities and the surrounding area.

3. Directing visitors to the start of the tour with the help of the audio guide or guidebook or to other parts of the Hall.

4. Actively listening to and responding to visitor enquiries and feedback in a professional and courteous manner.

5. To work as part of a unified team throughout the admissions, shop, coffee house and museum areas during busy periods and to cover staff breaks and absences.

**Systems and Finance**

1. To keep accurate time sheets each month and to discuss with the Beadle any discrepancies.

2. To operate the tills and credit card machines ensuring that all transactions are carried out accurately at all times.

**Internal Relationships**

1. Develop and maintain effective internal relationships with all members of Hall staff, working closely with key staff and volunteers to enable the successful running of the Hall’s Visitor Experience and Commercial operation.
