Housing and Welfare Officer

**Main Purpose of the Job Role**:
The main purpose of this role is to provide highly specialized Housing and Welfare services encompassing all matters related to Housing, Housing rights, income maximization, welfare benefits promotion, and protection of welfare rights. The role involves delivering increased prosperity and wellbeing to customers across the borough in alignment with policies, procedures, and objectives. Additionally, it involves supporting joint working and externally funded projects, representing customers in Tribunals and/or Court Hearings, and ensuring a progressive and responsive service delivery to customers, partners, and stakeholders.

**Role Specific Duties and Accountabilities**:
**Main Activities**:

- Assess risks efficiently, minimize customer waiting times, and maximize resolution of customer enquiries at the first point of contact.
- Prevent and resolve homelessness by providing advice, support, and information to those with housing needs.
- Assess the suitability of households for participation in the private rented sector access scheme.
- Advise households seeking private rented sector accommodation on their tenant obligations and provide support with Housing Benefit claims and other welfare benefits.
- Collaborate with Children’s Services and other agencies to prevent youth homelessness.
- Manage the assisted choice process for applicants with housing priority.
- Make appropriate referrals to other agencies for complex cases.
- Act as the first point of contact for individual contacts and referrals to the service.
- Work flexibly across various access channels to meet customer needs.
- Maintain residents’ and customers’ confidentiality and adhere to relevant policies and procedures.
- Complete administrative duties to support the service and maintain databases/information systems.
- Nominate applicants for housing association and other accommodation according to the scheme.
- Provide advice and information about welfare benefits and housing options.
- Conduct housing options interviews/assessments with applicants threatened with homelessness.
- Negotiate with various parties to prevent and resolve homelessness.
- Authorize placements into temporary accommodation as necessary.
- Maintain accurate file notes and keep relevant systems up to date.
- Respond to correspondence and complaints from various stakeholders.
- Participate in the induction of new staff.
- Carry out other duties consistent with the job purpose.
- Undertake complex casework related to housing, means-tested benefits, disability, and property-related grants.

**Qualifications**:

- 5 GCE’s or equivalent (including maths and English Language)
- NVQ level 2 or equivalent in customer services

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 3 months

**Salary**: £25.00-£32.50 per hour

Expected hours: 37 per week
