**Job description**:
The UK government has a crucial role to play in tackling the vital societal challenge of addressing global warming and has committed to a target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is taking forward a range of ambitious policy initiatives to meet the scale of the transformation necessary across the transport sector. The Rail Environment Team sits within the Rail Environment and Digital Division, part of the Rail Integration and Security Directorate. Our role is to ensure the railway supports these objectives.

As Senior Policy Advisor in the Rail Environment Policy team, you will be responsible for driving forward government strategy for rail decarbonisation working closely with a broad range of policy officials, analysts and senior leaders as well as key stakeholder groups from the rail industry including Network Rail and Great British Railways Transition Team to build a robust evidence base, comparing and weighing up options and leading a programme business case.

**Roles and Responsibilities**

**_ Your key duties and responsibilities will include:_**
- Delivering the rail section of the Department’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan (TDP). You will develop a programme which is consistent both with TDP commitments and with likely future budgets and build the investment case to secure funding.
- Building relationships with internal and external stakeholders to create a robust evidence base for the programme business case, drawing on expertise and finding solutions to problems.
- Leading rail’s contribution to wider government commissions including the Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Net Zero review and ensuring transport decarbonisation ambition is represented in wider environment agenda.

**Further Information**

You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. Occasional travel to attend meetings in our London office will be required for key meetings or for team events.

**Additional Information**

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

We are looking for a driven project delivery professional with strong, communication and interpersonal skills and who can plan, organise and manage their time effectively.

You will have effective decision-making skills, need to be pragmatic and enjoy proactively taking the initiative to find solutions to problems and will be confident in providing constructive challenge where necessary to ensure the best outcomes are delivered.

With excellent collaborative skills, you will confidently engage to build constructive relationships within your own, other analytical teams, a broad range of policy makers and leaders across the Department and industry partners.
