Senior Policy Adviser- People and Planet

London, United Kingdom Royal Society Full time

Job Scope:
The Royal Society is seeking an enthusiastic Senior Policy Adviser to join our People and Planet Policy Team, within the Science Policy section. The team lead on issues relating to people, plants, animals and the living environment.

This pivotal role involves working closely with the Head of Policy and three other Senior Policy Advisers to guide and amend strategy within our policy remit. There are currently 8 members of staff in the team within a Section of approximately 45 in Science Policy.

This is an exciting time to be joining the People and Planet Team. We are coming to the end of existing programmes of work and are looking to define our next set of priorities. You will work on some of the key global problems of our time such as human health, how we live sustainably within our means, and reversing the loss of biodiversity. Examples of recent topics led by the team include human genome editing and multifunctional land-management. Your role will initially be to help scope and define an impactful work programme, drawing on insight from both within and outside the organisation to tune topic, delivery method and outcome to effect positive change in the policy environment. Key partners include central and local government, funding agencies, business, industry, charitable bodies and the wider public sector. Science is an international endeavour and our work remit reflects that: you will need to think globally as to how you understand, approach and solve problems.

Primarily focussed within the People and Planet Team, many of the issues we deal with have clear overlap with work led by the Society’s other major policy themes - data, education, emerging technology and policy for science. You will be expected to have the versatility and breadth of interests and skills to support work in other programmes as the need arises, and whilst The Society’s policy work is led by the science policy team, we also work closely with colleagues in Communications, Public Affairs, Public Engagement, International Affairs and Diversity & Industry Programme teams to deliver outcomes.

We typically undertake the following activities, on topics that reflect the Society’s priorities:

- Projects: Analysing the scientific evidence relating to major policy issues in collaboration with other experts
- Reports & publications: Producing reports, statements, consultation responses and other publications on a regular basis
- Events: Bringing together policymakers and scientists to discuss current topics in science policy

**The Royal Society**

The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK. We are dedicated to promoting excellence in science for the benefit of humanity. The Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering and medicine. Providing scientific advice to shape policy is one of its strategic priorities. The Society’s reputation for excellence in science policy is founded on the expertise of its Fellows, its wider convening power, and the quality, rigour and timeliness of all its work.

The Science Policy section comprises around 45 staff working across a range of themes and policy areas, according to scientific and policy priorities. It works in partnership with businesses, national academies, learned societies, charities and government, and deploys a wide range of channels and approaches - from the delivery of major reports to rapid shorter statements, the creation of influential networks, skilful use of the Society’s digital and media channels, and well-founded programmes of events. The Society continues to develop and look for innovative approaches that will increase its influence in national and international policy debates.
