We are pushing the boundaries in robotic surgery. In practice, this means exploring technologies that improve the Versius experience, helping improve surgical efficiency, effectiveness and safety, e.g., contrasting healthy tissue from unhealthy tissue, tumour from non-tumour. In this role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a large research team and the oversight of several programmes of work. You'll have overall responsibility for taking ideas from concept to proof of concept, for maintaining scientific rigour throughout experimental design, bench, and early pre-clinical testing, ensuring that research is aligned with CMR's vision and strategy.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research team at CMR is tasked with creating next generation technologies to solve the greatest challenges in surgery. The team are a diverse and inquisitive group of engineers, scientists, clinicians, and mathematicians working on exciting projects across robot mechatronics and control, vision and optics, energy devices, instruments, VR/AR/MR, digital surgery, and AI/ML to name a few The mission is to fill CMR's product roadmap with innovative technologies that disrupt the field of mínimally invasive surgery, transforming surgery for good.

As the Head of Research you will:

- Work with CMR's strategists to seek out opportunities for innovation and disruption
- Set the direction of the research teams towards achieving CMR's vision and taking ideas from concept to proof of concept
- Manage the research budget and cost centre
- Identify the need to grow capacity and expertise - both growing headcount and managing development of the current team
- Lead and inspire
- maintaining a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative environment that embraces success and learns from failure
- Be accountable for technical and scientific rigour in all research, as well as all milestones and deliverables
- Promote scientific excellence through technical review, teaching and mentoring, whilst seeking out opportunities for your own continued professional development
- Build and manage collaborations with third parties (academic and industry partners) for technology awareness, assessment, outsourcing and integration
- Network widely within CMR and externally, to realise new opportunities
- Collaborate with CMR's strategic portfolio managers and leadership team, to pitch research outputs as potential new products/features

**About you**:
To be successful in this role we're looking for:

The whole Research and Strategy team undertake research projects in a wide variety of disciplines. Experience or knowledge of any of following may be beneficial too (but are nonessential for this role):

- Previous experience in the medical device / surgical device industry.
- Experience in or an understanding of medical device development: quality management systems (ISO 13485), risk management (ISO 14961), MDR and FDA
