**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**Job Title**: Operational Support / Farm (Wales)

**Location**: Freshfields Animal Rescue, Nebo, Caernarfon, Wales

**Hours**:30 hours per week (6 hours x 5 days)

**Reports to**: Operations Manager, Wales

The farm unit at Freshfields Animal Rescue is relocating from our Liverpool rescue, to Wales. We currently care for pigs, sheep, and ducks, however knowledge of caring for geese, cockerels, hens and other farm animals is essential. Supporting the Operations Manager in furthering the aims of the Charity, by playing an active role in the day to day operational activities of the rescue centre and ensuring that all relevant procedures are followed by staff and visitors.

**Farm**:
Each animal is treated as a complete individual with their own particular needs. We ensure that we address both their physical and psychological well
- being. Residents only live with other residents they get on with and give each other companionship and stimulation.

The nature of work on the farm involves physical activity. Heavy lifting, mud, uneven ground and dust is the reality of working within a farm setting.

All animals are available for adoption and rehoming. Training will be given on how to assess adoptees’ suitability and on the Freshfields’ relevant policies and procedures.

**Job Purpose**:
Your aim is to deliver an excellent standard of care, providing for the animals’ daily needs and maintaining their living accommodation to a high standard, while supporting the Operations Manager with the day to day operational activities.

Your Job Description should be read in conjunction with the Quality Policy and the One Charity Policy, which provide a framework of reference for your role.

**Key Activities Farm / Support**:

- Co-ordinate effective gathering of information as directed by the Operations Manager, ensuring relevant data is recorded, keeping accurate paper and electronic records, including admissions, adoptions and veterinary treatment, and facilitate data collection and the effective communication of information, working with the animal carers on the ground you will ensure that appropriate and consistent records are kept across all areas
- Supervision of designated staff, including carers of horses and cats, or any other animal type. Provide leadership and supervision, informally on a daily basis or formally through appraisals / staff supervisions
- Promote the Volunteer Development Policy, ensuring all staff are encouraging volunteers to take up opportunities for assigned jobs and for learning and development activities where practicable
- Oversee the maintenance of Health and Safety procedures in the working environment and refer any concerns to the Operation Manager
- Daily preparation of food for Farm animals, organisation and supervision of feeding and watering of all animals
- Performing health checks and giving medicinal treatments as prescribed by Freshfields consulting Veterinary surgeon
- Cleaning living accommodation, involving daily checks, mucking out and providing clean bedding, bowls and carriers
- Maintaining sheds and shelters, cleaning out ponds and concrete areas

Your day to day work will involve interacting with the public, presenting a positive image of the charity in everything you do.

**This will include**:

- Welcoming visitors and potential adopters to the farm area
- Promoting the work of Freshfields, including attendance at events such as the Open Day and others. Produce and deliver preventative awareness and education programmes and workshops to groups and organisations
- Communicating the unique values and ethos of Freshfields, including our commitment to vegan principles and practice
- Receiving donations from the public in a courteous and friendly manner
- Reminding supporters and visitors of current and upcoming fundraising events and campaigns

**Other**:

- Working within all relevant Freshfields operational and personnel policies and procedures as directed, including but not limited to: Health and Safety, Confidentiality and Equality and Diversity in the workplace
- Working closely with the fundraising team and public relations colleagues, providing material for articles, press releases, features, sponsor updates and being confident to speak on camera / hold radio interviews
- Demonstrating a flexible approach and a ‘can-do’ attitude to the challenges which will be presented on a daily basis
- Any other duties consistent with the requirements of the post

**Person Specification**:

- Welsh speaker desirable or the commitment to learn Welsh
- Demonstrated commitment to work in an organisation where the input of all staff and stakeholders is heard and valued
- Commitment to the principles of Equality and Diversity in the workplace
- 3 years experience in animal handling and husbandry, particularly with farm animals
- Full driving licence
- Knowledge of Welfare Codes of Practice / Government regulations in relation to farm animals
