Working in partnership with the director of midwifery and gynaecology, medical leads and general management team to ensure that divisional and corporate objectives in relation to the workforce, service delivery, clinical quality, safety and financial control, are carried out

Put women and their families at the centre of care, implementing necessary service improvements to ensure this is a reality, in line with national and local drivers

Responsible for the antenatal and newborn screening programme, including oversight of reporting and direct line management of the screening Midwives

Responsible for inpatient and community lead midwives, specialist midwives: screening, practice development, perineal, infant feeding, risk manager and quality improvement

Oversee projects for service improvement, supporting matrons/specialist midwives across the service with implementation. Undertake capacity planning for the immediate and long term for the Unit

Have a strong focus on improving women’s experience of maternity services

Take a lead on matters of patient safety and ensure risks are well managed

Maintain own clinical practice and act as a role model for the midwifery workforc

To ensure a safe service is provided in all women’s services areas by:
Working in liaison with the matrons and senior midwives to ensure that available staff are deployed across the inpatient and outpatient areas, to keep all areas open, with staffing numbers at the recommended and agreed levels

Work with the director of midwifery and gynaecology to develop the skill mix of staff to provide optimum care within given resources; keeping temporary staffing to the minimum to cover the service safely

Having a strong presence in all clinical areas, providing visible leadership, which may involve occasional weekend and night work

Participation in the midwifery manager on-call rota
