Main duties of the job

The post will provide psychological input to adults with blood cancers (including individuals undergoing stem cell transplant) as both inpatient and outpatient work. The clinical psychologist will play a key part in the MDT case management of patients and will support staff to provide level 1 & 2 psychological support to patients. In addition the clinical psychologist will offer specialist advice, consultation and supervision to non-psychologists within the service.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist who is interested in expanding their experience in working with adults with cancer. Appropriate clinical supervision will be provided by clinical psychologists working in the adult medical psychology service. Currently, the post will be supervised by a very experienced Consultant Clinical Psychologist working within Clinical Haematology.

Working for our organisation

It is essential that the post-holder has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and to be HCPC registered by the time of commencing in post. The post holder will be employed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and will usually be based at Nottingham City Hospital but may be required to work at both the QMC and City Campus.

Person specification

**Qualifications**:
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with people with medical/chronic physical health conditions and across a range of severity and presentations.
- HCPC registration

Desirable criteria
- Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.

Experience

Essential criteria
- Working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist for at least 2 years
- Psychologist in Clinical Health Psychology or with issues of health and illness
- Experience of exercising clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment
- Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision
- Experience of working in an acute hospital setting

Desirable criteria
- Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
- Experience of conducting clinical research and service evaluation
- Experience of assessing and treating patients with cancer

Communication

Essential criteria
- Excellent skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
- Commitment to support the Trust’s Values

Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within a multicultural framework
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies or assessment methodologies

Analytical & judgement

Essential criteria
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including both quantitative and qualitative methods

Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology
- Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for people with serious health conditions

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
- Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to distressing situations
- Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice
- Ability to develop and use complex multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings

Desirable criteria
- Experience and/or training in the supervision of other psychologists.

Physical skills

Essential criteria
- Ability to move between a number of locations within the hospital in a working day.
