Defence Science and Technology (DST) is a part of MOD Head Office. We sit at the heart of the Defence Science and Technology (S&T) Enterprise, and direct Defence’s S&T policy, strategy and activities on behalf of Defence’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Dame Angela McLean. Our purpose is to maximise the impact of S&T for Defence and Security of the UK.

We commission a large S&T research portfolio, advise on and cohere S&T activities across Defence, lead S&T policy making and strategic cross-government, national and international collaboration and ensure that the totality of Defence’s S&T activity has the intended strategic impact. S&T is a key contributor to understanding our adversaries, overseas operations, the nuclear deterrence, homeland security, development of new, winning capabilities, and identification of alternative solutions to strategic Defence challenges.

The post-holder is responsible for leading on all strategic workforce planning issues. There are four central elements to the role: developing a strategic workforce plan, implementing that plan (including developing and maintaining DST loan, secondment and fixed term appointment policies and procedures with academia and industry and undertaking outreach activity as appropriate), providing recruitment advice and guidance to line managers, and line managing a Band D who will support this work. The post will develop business systems/databases, enhancing automation to deliver management information on the above to feed senior management boards.

You will have a fantastic opportunity to personally support recruitment and lead thinking on workforce planning within the directorate, by maintaining workforce baselines and influencing senior management team.

This position is advertised at 36/37 hours per week Tacos Dependant

**Job description**:
Activities include (but are not limited to):

- Advising line managers on a 1-2-1 basis regarding recruitment options. Finding the right type of resource to fill vacant posts
- Line management of 1x D band member of staff
- Commissioning, collating and maintaining directorate workforce data, as well as ad hoc requests for information
- Building and maintaining relationships with HR and workforce colleagues from across MOD, supporting them to respond to data commissions on time
- Knowledge management of key workforce data and reports
- Maintenance of SharePoint site and other resources as applicable for directorate-wide use for recruitment and other HR related matters.
- Developing data visualisations for reports for use by senior stakeholders.
- Managing the team inbox to monitor departmental returns and respond to queries
- Managing the talent schemes DST are involved with e.g. Fast Stream

**Person specification**:
You will be a highly motivated self-starter who is able to work with data effectively and to generate insight to inform workforce planning activities and strategic workforce activities.

You will be comfortable delivering to tight deadlines and to work flexibly across work streams, you’ll also be required to demonstrate that you can problem solve and be innovative to deliver solutions.
- Essential Criteria:
- Ability to work with data, including analysing datasets and extracting key information
- Understanding of how data can be used to inform workforce planning and people strategy
- Experience of using spreadsheets to analyse and present data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience of building strong working relationships with internal and external senior stakeholders
