London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs a substantial number of Civil Servants, with the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) accounting for a significant portion of this workforce. This role is essential in nurturing future Army leaders through a diverse array of professional disciplines.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is dedicated to training a substantial number of British Army and International officers annually. As part of the Faculty of Leadership, Security and Warfare, you will contribute to a pivotal educational experience for these officers. The Faculty comprises a collaborative team of over 40 scholars across three specialized departments: Communication and Applied Behavioural Science, Defence and International Affairs, and War Studies. Together with esteemed institutions such as the University of Reading and the Henley Business School, we deliver foundational courses in Leadership and Strategic Studies.

The Communication and Applied Behavioural Science Department (CABS) is seeking to enhance its team with a passionate educator who possesses expertise in leadership, behavioural or social sciences. If you are enthusiastic about applying your knowledge in practical settings to deliver impactful education, we invite you to consider this opportunity.

We advocate for a Smarter Working approach, integrating flexible work practices and modern technology to promote a healthy work-life balance while achieving effective outcomes. While we value flexibility, we expect a commitment to in-office collaboration, particularly for new team members.

This role is structured around a 37-hour work week.

Key Responsibilities

In this dynamic position, you will be responsible for designing and delivering educational content at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Your focus will be on understanding human behaviour within the complexities of modern warfare, emphasizing the role of leadership and social sciences in preparing Army officers to excel in challenging environments. The CABS curriculum is designed to provide valuable insights and practical skills for personal leadership development.

As a member of Sandhurst, a globally recognized leadership institution, you will engage with a network of prestigious academic organizations. Opportunities for applied academic work during field training exercises across Europe and delivering courses to military audiences worldwide will be available.

Research and Development

CABS encourages scholarly research in leadership, behavioural science, psychology, sociology, conflict resolution, and defence studies. The primary focus of this role is teaching, which includes leading seminars for small groups of students. A strong commitment to education, research engagement, and a desire to publish are essential. We support personal development tailored to individual needs, including opportunities for doctoral studies, teaching qualifications, and research sabbaticals.

Diversity and Inclusion

CABS values diversity and inclusion, recognizing that varied backgrounds contribute to innovative ideas. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every employee can thrive and maximize their contributions.

Qualifications

To be considered for the Senior Lecturer position in CABS, candidates must:

  • Deliver engaging teaching in leadership, behavioural, and social psychology at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels, with a focus on military applications.
  • Conduct research in relevant fields and publish findings.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation in managing professional and administrative responsibilities.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills for academic support tasks, including international lecturing and workshops.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and be open to expanding expertise beyond immediate areas.

Essential Qualifications

A postgraduate qualification in one of the following areas: Leadership and Management, Behavioural Science, Psychology, Sociology, Conflict Resolution/Conflict Studies, or Defence/Military Studies. Candidates without a PhD may substitute relevant experience and a Master's degree.

Desirable Qualifications

A teaching qualification, with a goal of achieving a Level 7 qualification.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development, including teaching qualifications.
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support in maintaining a healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced leave policies for maternity, paternity, and adoption.
  • Special leave for volunteering activities.
  • Potential for fully paid international travel.
  • Tailored learning and development opportunities.

The Army is committed to being a supportive employer, promoting flexible working arrangements to enhance work-life balance. We strive to accommodate individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview process, ensuring all employees can perform their roles effectively.

Sandhurst offers a range of amenities, including free on-site parking, subsidized gym memberships, extensive grounds, and various recreational facilities.
