London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence is home to a diverse workforce of over 50,000 Civil Servants, with the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employing approximately 7,000 personnel across more than 300 locations. Our team encompasses a wide range of roles, including trainers, human resources professionals, educators, and psychologists, all contributing to the essential task of training future Army leaders.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is responsible for the training of around 1,000 British Army and International officers annually. In this role, you will be part of the Faculty of Leadership, Security, and Warfare, which plays a crucial role in the educational journey of Army officers. Collaborating with over 40 academics across three departments—Communication and Applied Behavioural Science, Defence and International Affairs, and War Studies—you will help deliver the first year of MSc or BSc programs in Leadership and Strategic Studies as part of the Army Higher Education Pathway (AHEP).

The Communication and Applied Behavioural Science Department (CABS) is seeking a dedicated and motivated lecturer to join its team. If you possess a background in leadership, behavioural or social sciences, and are passionate about applying your expertise in practical settings to deliver impactful education, we invite you to consider this opportunity. Your role will be pivotal in shaping the future leaders of the British Army.

We are committed to Smarter Working, which combines flexible working practices, digital technology, and modern workspaces to promote a healthy work-life balance while achieving effective outcomes. While we encourage flexibility, there is an expectation of being present in the office at least 60% of the time to foster collaboration, especially for new team members.

This position entails a commitment of 37 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

In this dynamic role, you will be responsible for preparing and delivering educational content at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will play a vital role in exploring human behavior within the complex landscape of modern warfare, emphasizing the significance of leadership, behavioural, and social sciences in preparing Army officers for success. The CABS curriculum is designed to provide valuable insights and practical techniques that enhance personal leadership and interpersonal awareness.

Working at Sandhurst, a globally recognized leadership academy known for cultivating exceptional leaders, you will have the opportunity to engage in applied academic work during field training exercises across Europe and deliver educational programs to military audiences worldwide.

CABS encourages research in leadership, behavioural science, psychology, sociology, conflict resolution, and defence studies. While the primary focus of this role is teaching, you will lead and facilitate seminars for small groups of students, typically around 12 participants. A strong commitment to teaching, research enthusiasm, and a desire to publish are essential. We support personal development tailored to individual needs, which may include assistance with doctoral studies, teaching qualifications, research sabbaticals, and access to a comprehensive onsite library for research purposes.

Commitment to Diversity

CABS values diversity and inclusion, recognizing that individuals from varied backgrounds contribute fresh perspectives. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive work environment where every employee can realize their potential and maximize their contributions.

Qualifications

To be considered for the Senior Lecturer position in CABS, candidates must:

  • Deliver engaging teaching in leadership, behavioural, and social psychology within an applied context at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels, with a keen interest in military applications.
  • Conduct research in relevant fields and produce publishable outcomes.
  • Exhibit self-motivation in managing both professional and personal administrative tasks.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills for additional academic support tasks, including overseas lecturing, conferences, and professional workshops within Defence.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and be open to acquiring new skills in emerging areas beyond immediate expertise.

Essential Qualifications

A postgraduate qualification in one of the following areas is required: Leadership and Management, Behavioural Science, Psychology, Sociology, Conflict Resolution/Conflict Studies, or Defence/Military Studies. Candidates without a PhD may qualify with a Master's degree in one of the specified disciplines along with relevant experience.

Desirable Qualifications

A teaching qualification with a goal of achieving a Level 7 qualification is preferred.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development, including teaching qualifications.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support in achieving a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption leave.
  • 6 days of special leave per year for volunteering activities.
  • Optional fully paid international travel.
  • Tailored learning and development opportunities.

The Army is committed to being a supportive employer, promoting flexible working arrangements to help maintain a healthy work-life balance. We ensure reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities throughout the application and interview process, as well as during employment.

Employees can enjoy various on-site amenities, including free parking, subsidized gym and swimming pool memberships, and access to extensive parkland and recreational facilities.

We believe in the potential of every individual to make a meaningful impact and provide support for career advancement, including pathways to professional body membership and modern apprenticeships.

Please note that the post does not offer relocation expenses, and external recruits new to the Civil Service will undergo a six-month probation period.

The Ministry of Defence is dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment, including initiatives to promote a smoke-free workplace.

We may contact candidates regarding their experience through a voluntary and anonymous satisfaction survey to enhance our recruitment services.
