London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs a substantial workforce, including approximately 7,000 Civil Servants within the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) across numerous locations. Our team is diverse, encompassing various roles such as trainers, human resources specialists, educators, and psychologists, among others. Supporting the training of future Army leaders is essential to our mission.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is responsible for training around 1,000 officers annually, both from the British Army and international forces. In this role, you will be part of the Faculty of Leadership, Security, and Warfare, which plays a crucial role in the educational journey of officer candidates. You will collaborate with over 40 academics across three departments: Communication and Applied Behavioural Science, Defence and International Affairs, and War Studies. Together with the University of Reading and the Henley Business School, we offer the first year of MSc or BSc programs in Leadership and Strategic Studies as part of the Army Higher Education Pathway (AHEP).

The Communication and Applied Behavioural Science Department (CABS) is seeking a dedicated lecturer to join our motivated team. If you possess a background in leadership, behavioural or social sciences, and are passionate about applying your expertise in practical settings to deliver impactful education, we would like to hear from you. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of future British Army officers.

We advocate for Smarter Working, believing that a blend of flexible working arrangements, digital tools, and modern workspaces will facilitate a healthy work-life balance while ensuring effective outcomes. You will be expected to determine the optimal environment for your contributions, balancing personal needs with those of your team and the organization. However, recognizing the importance of in-person collaboration, especially for new team members, you will be required to be present in the office at least 60% of the time.

This role is structured for 37 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

In this dynamic position, you will prepare and deliver educational content at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will play a pivotal role in exploring human behavior within the complex landscape of modern warfare, emphasizing the significance of leadership, behavioural, and social sciences in equipping British Army officers with the necessary skills to navigate this environment. The CABS curriculum is designed to provide valuable insights and practical strategies to enhance personal leadership and interpersonal awareness.

Academic Environment

Working at Sandhurst, a globally recognized leadership institution, you will be part of a network that collaborates with esteemed academic organizations both in the UK and internationally. You will have opportunities to engage in applied academic projects during field training exercises across Europe and deliver educational programs to military audiences worldwide.

Research and Development

CABS encourages research in leadership, behavioural science, psychology, sociology, conflict resolution, and defence studies. The primary focus of this role is teaching, where you will lead seminars for small groups of approximately 12 students. A strong commitment to teaching, research, and a desire to publish are essential. Personal development is supported and tailored to individual needs, potentially including doctoral studies, teaching qualifications, research sabbaticals, and access to a premier onsite library for research support.

Diversity and Inclusion

CABS values diversity and inclusion, recognizing that individuals from varied backgrounds contribute fresh perspectives. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive work environment where every employee can realize their potential and maximize their contributions.

Candidate Requirements

Senior Lecturers in CABS are expected to:

  • Deliver engaging leadership, behavioural, and social psychology education in an applied context at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels, with enthusiasm for integrating this knowledge into a military framework.
  • Conduct research in relevant fields and produce publishable outcomes.
  • Exhibit self-motivation in managing both professional and personal administrative tasks.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills for additional academic support roles, including overseas lecturing, conferences, and professional workshops within Defence.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development and a willingness to enhance skills in emerging areas, even beyond immediate expertise.

Essential Qualifications

A postgraduate qualification in one of the following areas: Leadership and Management, Behavioural Science, Psychology, Sociology, Conflict Resolution/Conflict Studies, Defence/Military Studies. If a PhD is not held, a Master's degree in one of these disciplines along with relevant experience may be acceptable.

Desirable Qualifications

A teaching qualification, with the intention of pursuing a Level 7 qualification.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Benefits include:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development, including teaching qualifications.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support in maintaining a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption leave.
  • 6 days of special leave per year for volunteering activities.
  • Optional fully paid international travel.
  • Tailored learning and development opportunities.

The Army is committed to being a supportive employer, promoting flexible working arrangements to help maintain a healthy work-life balance. We ensure that individuals with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations during the application process and throughout employment.
