Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC funded Impact Accelerator Award Project under the supervision of Dr. Sebastian Pike at the University of Warwick. The Research will involve the synthesis and characterisation of molecular precursors for the production of high-surface area ceria. The project will investigate the transformation of precursors into ceria materials and will study the properties of these new materials within the context of using them in three-way catalytic converters for automobiles.

Ceria is a reducible material, allowing for reversible uptake, storage and release of oxygen atoms. This property is crucial for redox catalysts, including three-way catalytic converters in motor-vehicles, which significantly reduce automotive pollution. Most redox reactivity occurs near the surface of ceria particles, therefore, small particles with high surface area will give enhanced properties. One in three vehicles globally contains a JM catalyst, preventing 40 tonnes of pollutants per minute, therefore, advancements in these technologies have significant potential for societal impact.

The researcher will work within the Pike group in the Chemistry Department of the University of Warwick based in the interdisciplinary Materials and Analytical Science building. The research group have dedicated lab space for synthesis. Alongside the excellent departmental facilities (including NMR spectroscopy) the group have regular access to state-of-the-art X-ray diffraction, microscopy and spectroscopy equipment through the X-ray diffraction, Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy Research Technology Platforms.

The researcher should be a highly competent crystallographer with ability to conduct and analyse single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. The researcher should have expertise of conducting NMR and EPR spectroscopy experiments. Ideally the researcher will have some previous expertise of working with an industry partner.

The researcher will be an excellent communicator capable of working effectively, both independently and as part of a team. They will possess excellent planning and time management skills. They will assist in the running of the research group including supporting research students, in addition to ensuring their own research objectives are achieved effectively. They will prepare regular presentations and written reports detailing their research progress.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.
