Join the cutting-edge HyperSolver project as a Research Fellow and be at the forefront of developing intelligent solutions for air traffic management. This EU-funded project brings together a consortium of leading universities and industry partners, including Neometsys, Eurocontrol, Luftfartsverket, ENAC, Nanyang Technological University, and the University of Warwick. As a Research Fellow, you will have the unique opportunity to develop and implement state-of-the-art deep reinforcement learning algorithms using PyTorch, contributing to the creation of a holistic, end-to-end solver for managing aircraft density, trajectory complexity, and conflict resolution. We are seeking applicants with a PhD (obtained or close to completion) in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related field, with a strong focus on deep reinforcement learning. You should have extensive experience in developing and implementing deep reinforcement learning algorithms using PyTorch, and a solid background in machine learning techniques.

Proficiency in Python programming is essential, as well as experience working with realistic simulators like MuJoCo, OpenAI Gym, or AirSim. Familiarity with air traffic management concepts and systems is desirable, but a strong willingness to learn and adapt to domain-specific challenges is crucial.

A publication record in top-tier machine learning conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, or journals like JMLR, IEEE TPAMI, or Machine Learning, is highly desirable.

You should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently when required, is essential. Experience in project management and the ability to deliver high-quality results within tight deadlines are also highly valued.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.

The Department’s research spans a broad range of areas in statistics, data science, theoretical and applied probability, finance and interdisciplinary collaboration. Major strategic initiatives include CRiSM, the Applied Statistics & Risk Unit (AS&RU), which promotes and coordinates external partnerships, and the national Academy for PhD Training in Statistics (APTS).

The Department has close relations with the co-located Mathematics Institute and Department of Computer Science and with other departments such as Economics and the Warwick Business School and is strongly engaged with the Alan Turing Institute in London. The newly established Warwick Centre for the Applications of the Mathematical and Computing Sciences (CAMaCS) is a joint initiative with Mathematics and Computer Science designed to link Warwick’s world-leading research in the departments with external partners and bring benefits to society through impact.
