Committed To Equal Opportunities

Overview

This post is jointly funded by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s (BCUHB) Research and Development programme and the Welsh National Centre for Mental Health. The postholder will be part of the Centre for Mental Health and Society (CFMHAS), Bangor University. The centre was established in 2012, supported by a grant from BCUHB charitable funds. lt is led by a social psychiatrist (Professor Rob Poole) and a social scientist (Professor Peter Huxley). CFMHAS brings together social, clinical and biomedical scientists. Our researchers have diverse professional backgrounds, including social policy, psychiatry, social work, psychology, sociology, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry and medicine. CFMHAS seeks to exploit the potential of bringing together social and clinical researchers in a true multidisciplinary partnership.

The Project

This new post has been established with joint funding from the NCMH and BCUHB in order to develop research capacity on social aspects of mental disorders. The primary role will be to conduct a feasibility study based on previous work analysing quantitative data collected in the NCMH cohort project. This is a Welsh study that was original conceptualised as a biobank. However, the involvement of CFMHAS introduced key data items relating to social factors, including early social environment. The study has data on more than 6,000 participants. We have developed a method to ascertain area level deprivation during childhood based on adults responses to questions about housing conditions. The feasibility study will test these methods and make a preliminary examination of the relationship between childhood and adult social adversity, and the course and social outcome of mental health problems. This will support a major grant proposal for a larger study. The post holder will be expected to help prepare this proposal and to take a major role in any subsequent project that attracts funding.

The postholder will be part of the CFMHAS team and will co-ordinate with NCMH, which has its primary base in Cardiff, as well as clinical colleagues in BCUHB. We are seeking to appoint a talented and highly motivated researcher who will be able to lead the planning and implementation of health research.

Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of research proposals, provide support to the team in the gathering and analysis of quantitative data, contribute towards reports, publications and presentations, and assist in administration as needed.
