Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Neonatal Service for an experienced for a Clinical Educator/ Deputy Ward sister with wide mentorship experience and evidence of staff education and development. In this role you will continue to develop your teaching and mentorship skills in the clinical area and the classroom, supporting the team to induct nursing and midwifery students and new staff nurses to medical and surgical neonatal nursing. Working as part of our practice development team you will facilitate study days, develop learning packages, implement change in clinical practice and gain audit experience and support junior members of the team to learn these skills. You will deputise for the Practice Development Nurse, where needed, attending Trust and Service meetings, assisting in the preparation of data to evidence staff training and development. 50% of your working time is non-clinical to support these activities. You will continue to develop team management skills as Nurse in Charge within a regional surgical neonatal service, taking charge on a regular basis.

You are a role model and ambassador for high standards of clinical practice and professional behaviour. You’ll need to be able to take the lead and act on your own initiative, to assess and plan how to meet goals and objectives for yourself, learners, members of the practice development team and the neonatal service. You will have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with families and within the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing. You will be able to give constructive feedback to all multidisciplinary team members to effect ongoing and continuous improvement in patient safety and the quality of patient care and support junior members of the practice development team to develop these skills themselves.

The Neonatal Service delivers care across two sites at the City and QMC Campuses. As a lead centre of the Trent Perinatal Network, we offer medical and surgical intensive care for extremely premature and very sick neonates. Our aim is for babies to be treated in the right place at the right time by a skilled and knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team with the family at the centre of this care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A proactive role model who leads in the clinical environment on the provision of clinical education and assessment of competence in the ward /department.

Responsible for the continued development of evidence-based nursing practice across the Neonatal Service.

A clinically credible practitioner, the post holder will utilise their clinical experience and related skills to provide support for all staff and demonstrate a commitment to the development and advancement of neonatal practice.

The post holder will work at least 50% within the clinical setting, supporting learning within the unit and establishing change in practice as well as working alongside team members to support individual development.

A dedicated 50% of time will be focused on developing clinical practice using educational tools and techniques, establishing guidance, education resources and aids, out of the clinical area.

Supports and deputises for the ward sister, taking managerial, clinical, and professional responsibility for a team of nurses

Supports staff, ensuring the provision of high quality patient care in the most efficient and safe manner in accordance with Directorate and hospital policies and procedures.
