The Nottingham University Hospitals Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is situated within The Trent Cardiac Centre at City Campus; 16 beds providing level 2 and level 3 care to patients following cardiac surgery.

The Units have a progressive approach and are supported by Band 7s, and a Matron for CICU. There are a wide array of career pathways to take and opportunities to develop additional skills. Cardiac Intensive care is committed to providing the highest quality of care and maintaining consistently high standards in a professional and friendly atmosphere. New staff will be allocated a mentors and will have a period of supernumerary time and an abundance of teaching and support.

We are currently looking to recruit enthusiastic, forward thinking nurses to our team in this often challenging environment. You should possess the ability to work well in stressful situations, have excellent communication skills and good interpersonal and organisational skills.

To support and deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure the provision of excellent nursing care and the effective management of staff and other resources. To co-ordinate the day-to-day management of the ward/department and ensure excellent communication is maintained. To ensure that there are education and training opportunities for all staff, including pre and post registration students and /or providing specialist knowledge while working in a clinical area under the guidance of Band 7

During regular clinical sessions, act as a role model and teacher, working alongside other staff including visiting all patients in the ward in the absence of the Ward Sister.

In collaboration with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, ensure that the patient has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care.

Improve and maintain standards of critical care nursing by working with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and using tools such as clinical benchmarking.

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.

Ensure that junior staff also see this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non‑clinical governance within the ward or department.

Along with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, support the ward or department team in completing appropriate risk assessments clinically and non clinically and develop action plans accordingly in order to provide a safe environment for the delivery of high quality patient care.

Ensure that all nursing documentation is regularly and appropriately reviewed and updated with changes implemented.

Ensure performance review appraisals annually and facilitate team members objectives and personal development plans
To undertake return to work sickness/absence reviews in conjunction with the Matron/deputy sister.
To identify hazards relating to clinical and non-clinical risks and undertake identified risk assessments. Ensure that the junior staffs also see this as important, by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non-clinical governance within the department. Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust’s requirements to improve practice.
