An exciting opportunity has arisen within our 16-bedded surgical paediatric ward. We are currently managing surgical elective patients from a wide number of surgical specialities including: orthopaedics, ophthalmic ENT, cleft lip and palate, and general surgery. We are part of a surgical floor that works closely together with Ambulatory Care managing day cases, and D35 managing emergency surgery at the present time.

We have recently achieved ANCC Pathway To Excellence accreditation and are currently the only Children's Hospital in Europe to have achieved this. This has opened up new opportunities which we are currently building on in Nottingham Children's Hospital.
**Main duties of the job**:

Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings.
In collaboration with the Ward Manager, ensure that the patient has a positive experience by evaluating patient process and the pathway of care.
You will be required to support the Ward Manager in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust’s requirements to improve practice.
You will also be a main point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff acting as a resource for problems, needs and able to clearly present the patient’s view to others.
On completion of successful training, you will be required to take charge of the nurse bleep for the Children's Hospital on occasions.

In addition, this role provides leadership and management support to the Ward Sister and team to ensure safe, effective running of the ward on a daily basis.

**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:
Encourage ward/department staff to be involved in the management of resources, by effective use of clinical and non-clinical supplies and understanding of financial issues.
Contribute to the work of time limited committees and project groups.
Ensure that, where applicable, information is maintained and kept in an appropriate place and that accurate records are maintained and stored in accordance with Trust and national policy.
Be a major instrument of change within the clinical area in response to clinical incidents and/or demands.
Participate in acting-up rota as required, holding the directorate/floor bleep as necessary.
Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring the development and ongoing management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff cover.
Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in
collaboration with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken.
Improve and maintain standards of essential (basic) nursing care by working with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and using tools such as clinical benchmarking. Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring clinical audit takes place in line with the Trust’s requirements to improve practice.
Work with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to identify hazards relating to clinical and non-clinical risks and undertake identified risk assessments.
Ensure that junior staff also sees this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non-clinical governance within the ward or department.
Along with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, support the ward or department team in completing appropriate risk assessments and develop action plans accordingly in order to provide a safe environment for the delivery of high quality patient care.
Ensure that all nursing documentation is regularly and appropriately reviewed and updated with changes implemented.
