Job overview

Due to service expansion, we are looking to recruit, enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join our fantastic team.

As a Screening Administrator and Helpline Operative, (SAHO), you will be working as part of a large team for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) based at QMC. The BCSP is a National Programme which currently invites people aged 56 - 74 year olds to take part in screening. Our Hub invites over 1 million people each year across the East Midlands and East of England to take part. We are currently widening the screening age to invite ALL those aged 50 - 54 by 2025, and we also provide a similar service to GPs across the East Midlands Area.

This is an exciting role with a lot of variety You will be working across three different areas, all within our one department at QMC, where you will have the chance to develop skills that may be new to you. Your work in the Programme helps detect bowel problems and early cancers, because of this, we’re significantly increasing the detection rates in our area. The work you do saves lives. In fact, people often get back in touch to thank us for the work we do.

If you’re passionate about working as part of team that strives to make a difference nationally, we want to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

You will have the opportunity to work across 3 areas throughout the week. These include:
Administration - duties including booking clinic appointments, sending out letters and test kits.
Helpline - speaking with the public on a national freephone helpline, giving advice and reassurance to questions and queries regarding the Programme.
Laboratory - adhering to good laboratory practices, dealing with sample reception, logging and checking of samples returned to the Hub.

Being able to confidently speak to members of the public and liaising with Screening Centres regarding clinic appointments is a requirement. Our staff must also be able to demonstrate empathy, compassion and deal with potentially distressing calls.

We hold full UKAS Accreditation and staff are required to adhere to strict policies and procedures.

We warmly welcome visits to our department so we can show you what a difference we make

Working for our organisation

The BCSP is an exciting programme aimed at reducing deaths associated with Bowel Cancer by detecting cancer early at a treatable stage. The Programme in the Eastern region has been running for 15 years and is still expanding and developing. The Eastern Hub is hosted by NUH NHS Trust, which places safety and experience as high priorities, contributing to the improvement in the quality of care provided.

Our organisation is driven by our strategic objectives and organisational values and we look for people who are strongly aligned with them.

Our Team works well together, and we expect everyone to support each other and ensure everyone feels welcome. We strongly encourage new suggestions for improved ways of working and promote a positive working environment.

Full training is provided for all areas (including Trust Mandatory Training) and is very structured and thorough. This includes the use of our dedicated screening IT (BCSS) system.

Annual Leave starts at 27 days a year plus bank holidays and there are additional benefits that come with working for the NHS.
