**What you'll work on**

Short-term cover for a Communications Officer to support the team with internal and external communications across a range of disciplines including creating campaigns, social media co-ordination, website updates etc.

**For this role, your main purpose will be**:

- Use the media and other channels to promote a positive image of the Council and explain its policies to residents, businesses, visitors, employees, tourists and other key audiences.
- Promote a positive and open working relationship with the media.
- Assist the production of core council publications, including the District Diary, by providing content.
- Assist with the promotion of Council campaigns, both internally and externally.
- Assist with internal communications and the Council’s website.

**Your duties will be**:

- To research, write and publish news releases and respond to media enquiries in line with Council procedures and quality guidelines.
- Develop contacts throughout the local media, but also trade and national press.
- To ensure a pro-active approach to communications through a positive use of forward planning and regular meetings with members and officers, as directed by the Head of Communications.
- Carry out marketing communications tasks for internal and external clients as agreed with the management team.
- To agree clear objectives with clients on communications campaigns and monitor outcomes making proposals for improvements.
- Provide advice to senior council officers, senior members, client departments and contractors on a range of communications issues, attending committees and other meetings when required.
- Participate in the design and development of campaigns, offering advice to the Head of Communications.
- Participate in Departmental Communications planning, working with colleagues in the departments to drive the process forward with the end goal of unified communications.
- Develop and maintain links with external organisations such as partners, contractors, professional bodies, voluntary sector, media and local and national government bodies in order to augment Council communications.
- To align marketing and communications projects with Council priorities and campaigns.
- To provide out of hours service for the media, as directed by the Head of Communications.
- To attend meetings and events, including those in the evening and weekend, as directed by the Head of Communications.
- Ensure equalities legislation is adhered to.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the job and with regard to the Guidelines contained in the Code of Practice for the elimination of discrimination in the field of employment against disabled persons or persons who have a disability.

**A few things to note**:

- The rate for this role is £18.04 per hour Umbrella
- The length of this role is for 5 months initially

**What we're looking for**

For this role, you will need to have the following:
**EXPERIENCE**
- Experience as a writer in print or broadcast media.
- Experience of/an understanding of local government.
- Experience of public consultation and survey-led marketing and communications campaigns
- Experience of a busy newsroom or communications environment

**SPECIAL ABILITIES/COMPETENCES**
- Ability to research stories and write concise, interesting, message-based original copy
- Ability to deconstruct and re-write other peoples’ copy, and to explain why changes have been made.
- Ability to write punchy, focused headlines, straplines and stand firsts.
- Able to accurately proofread copy and pick up on errors.
- Understanding of libel and copyright law and other areas of law deemed important (e.g. Children and Young People’s Act).
- Understanding of court reporting restrictions.
- Able to understand survey data and relate this to the design of a campaign, and the setting of campaign targets
- Is able to see ‘the big picture’ and how the work of the Marketing and Communications team supports the Council’s objectives, its priorities and campaigns.

**EDUCATION AND TRAINING**
- Qualification in writing or journalism, such as an NCTJ certificate.

**OTHER**
- Willing to travel to meet the needs of the service (including for meetings, conferences and training).
- Flexible, including the ability to undertake work outside normal working hours, including early starts and late finishes and able to attend evening meetings and undertake occasional weekend work.
