We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated researcher to combine robotic, therapeutic, and sensing components on a fibre-based probe for endoluminal high-precision cancer surgery**.**
Gastrointestinal cancers affecting the oesophagus, stomach and colon, are among the top ten cancers worldwide. Minimally invasive surgery uses endoscopes to access the body and offers important advantages compared to traditional open surgery through a large cut, including less trauma and faster recovery.
Endoscopies are complex, can take a long time to do, and treatments require experienced endoscopists. Many endoscopies fail to reach the end of the colon and the small intestine due to the number of tight bends in the gut. Incomplete removal of tumours leads to regrowth and complications. Improving access to flexible endoscopy for diagnosis and treatment is very important to patients and doctors.
This programme will create a soft robotic endoscope for the diagnosis and mínimally invasive treatment of conditions of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The post holder will be in charge of developing self-driving fibre-based soft robotic systems, integrating optical and biological sensing technologies and therapeutic lasers for endoscopic surgery. A self-steering fibre will be developed with our state-of-the-art fibre-drawing technique for fine positioning of the fibre-based optical spectroscopy and of the picosecond IR laser applicator for simultaneous tissue sensing and ablation. The fibre will incorporate a miniaturised aerosol plume capture and transfer component delivering ionised molecular clusters to a rapid evaporative ionisation mass spectrometer for metabolic profiling and consequent identification of ablated cells.
In this project the post holder will be working with Dr Temelkuran, who has pioneered the emerging field of multimaterial fibres. The post holder will initially be focusing on actuation mechanisms that will fulfil the design requirements of the device, investigating various geometries and combinations of materials that can facilitate the desired motion of the fibre probe. It is crucial for the design to consider the compatibility with the functions that will be integrated (surgical lasers and diagnostic elements). The post holder will work on the seamless integration of these functions and test them on realistic phantoms.
There is considerable scope for career growth within the post. The post holder will be expected to write up findings for publication and present their research at meetings and conferences.
The Division of Systems Medicine is home to one of the largest centres for metabolic spectroscopy in the world. In this project, it collaborates with the **Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery,** defining the surgery of the future.
**Duties and responsibilities**:
**Essential requirements**:
You will have an MSc / MRes in Medical robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with experience in surgical robots. You will be familiar with the design and manufacturing of endoluminal robotic systems and testing (including building testing setups). Familiarity with the relevant optical and other sensing systems is a plus. You will have a track record of working successfully in multi-disciplinary teams.
**Further information**:
This is a full-time and fixed term post for 36 months. You will be based at the Hammersmith Campus (East Acton) and South Kensington Campus.
