Band 5 Library and Health Literacy Skills Trainer

To work as part of the BASE Library Consortium providing training in search skills on the Knowledge and Library Hub, database native interfaces, critical appraisal and health literacy to develop and improve the skills of NHS staff, students and local communities to locate, access and assess health information to make informed decisions.

- Responsible for delivering a comprehensive training programme in library and information retrieval skills to all staff and students across the area covered by the BASE Library Consortium.
- The programme promotes the use of evidence based practice to improve the care of patients, management decision making and support requirements for further education and continuous professional development.
- Support health literacy awareness and use of the NHS App among BASE Library Consortium users, public library staff and members of the public by collaborating with public library services.
- A flexible approach to be taken towards delivering training in terms of location. Some flexibility is also required to allow working after normal hours.

1. Use professional knowledge and skills to take responsibility for developing and delivering a range of courses in information searching to include at least the following elements:
- Routine and advanced searching of clinical databases such as Medline, Embase, CINAHL and PsycINFO
- Searching of the Knowledge and Library Hub
- Cochrane Library
- Critical appraisal skills
- Health literacy awareness
- NHS App
The training will be available to NHS staff and students. Health literacy and NHS App training will available to public library staff and members of the public.
2. Plan and deliver health literacy training aligning to requirements ofQuality and Improvement Outcomes Framework for NHS Funded Library and Knowledge Services in England, 2019.
3. Project manage the training programme from its inception to completion, setting realistic and achieveable targets, developing and enhancing local relationships, promoting and evaluating and reporting on progress.
4. Be responsible for the safe use and security of equipment used by colleagues, students, and members of the public, e.g. computers and tablets used in training.
5. To be responsible for the effective promotion and marketing of the training both within the libraries and Consortium-wide, using a variety of methods to ensure that all staff have access to the information.
6. Use own knowledge and skills to translate search techniques, filtering and other aspects of the search process into terms and concepts that are appropriate to address the varying skill levels in information literacy of the trainees.
7. Work in close collaboration with BASE Consortium Library Managers and their teams to identify the training needs of various staff groups based on existing feedback and user mapping experience.
8. To work with other Library Trainers through the Regional Library Trainers’ Forum to set out and implement training programmes and work on related projects.
9. To continually evaluate the training using a variety of methods and modify courses accordingly based on feedback.
10. To be responsible for the development and production of appropriate training materials in hard copy and online formats and other support material for the training courses, such as learning objectives and lesson plans, Trainers’ notes, handouts, slidesets, evaluation forms and attendance certificates.
11. Keep abreast of developments within the learning and healthcare information environment to ensure learners receive quality education and learning.
12.Develop impact case studies to submit to HEE for publication in the case study database.
13. To collate and analyse monthly training statistics and work closely with the Library Services Manager to prepare and deliver progress reports for HEE and the BASE Consortium on a regular basis.
