The Mayor’s Diversity in the Public Realm Programme is working with Londoners to explore who should be represented in London’s public spaces and how. The programme is made up of three stands - projects which make significant additions to the public realm; developing an understanding of how public spaces are governed currently and making this more transparent for everyone and shining a light on what is currently represented and why. The programme has been developed in consultation with a specially appointed Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

The Principal Policy Officer is responsible for the delivery of the programme, managing the project team and making sure all strands of the programme work well together. A key focus of this role to make sure that all of the experience and learning which has come about over the past two years is captured and embedded within the GLA for the future. The programme is managed jointly by the Culture & Creative Industries and Community & Social Policy teams and combines culture, cultural infrastructure, social value, engagement, and public realm policy.

This is a really exciting moment to take on this project, making a real difference to London’s public spaces and the histories and moments that really matter to Londoners.

**Principal accountabilities**:

- Provide strategic leadership on all aspects of the Diversity in Public Realm programme management with boroughs, Commissioners, Partners Board members and other public and private agencies and partners. This will include overseeing delivery of current projects, legacy planning for the programme, maintaining internal and external relationships and building new partnership and synergies with other relevant programmes, including international cities
- Report to the Senior co-leads of the programme in line with planned performance and outputs and, budget commitments, identifying any risks and issues as appropriate. Contribute to the development of policy, strategic planning, research, and evaluation across the programme.
- Oversee the relationship with London boroughs to ensure programme outcomes and outputs and share are shared and embedded in borough working practice. Promote and communicate this work to stakeholders to redefine and influence future programme and policy.
- Manage the external Commission and the Partners Board as advisers on the legacy and ongoing development of the programme. Ensure that project strands are well consulted upon with politicians, partners, stakeholders, and local communities.
- Establish and develop partnerships with the culture sector and wider public/private business community to create new partnerships and opportunities for diversity in public realm. Engage with internal and external stakeholders to influence their work and create a legacy for the Commission, including the Regeneration and Economic Development, Education and Youth and Communities and Social Policy Units, London & Partners, London’s creative industries, businesses, higher education, and government departments.
- Oversee the delivery of a communications strategy, including website and social media plans, providing advice and guidance. Manage hiring of consultants to deliver projects, including procurement processes, project management, monitoring, and review.
- With the project team, plan and deliver high profile events, launches and / or announcements to enable high visibility of the programme across London and national media and with private/public sector, working with the team and key stakeholders, including Commissioners.
- Keep abreast of key issues relevant to the programme, and use this information inform the continued advocacy for the programme.
- Oversee the evaluation strategy for the programme and its legacy and manage any consultants appointed, including planning and reporting, reporting internally, and planning for legacy programmes and the advocacy of the programme.
- Prepare and present reports, briefs and recommendations on key issues and actions to the Senior Management and Mayoral Development teams to facilitate executive understanding and finding resolutions.
- Contribute to the development of policies and strategies within the Culture and Creative Industries Unit and wider GLA Group.
