Housing Needs Officer

The aim of the Housing Needs team is to ensure people in housing need receive the support necessary to help them meet their needs. The role of the Housing Needs Officer, with a firm focus upon the prevention and rapid ending of homelessness, is central to achieving this aim.
**Main duties and responsibilities**:
- To work with customers to prevent homelessness wherever possible and in the event of homelessness, to rapidly secure accommodation. This approach requires providing high quality housing advice and creative thinking to find housing solutions.
- Undertake prevention and homelessness casework and make decisions in accordance with housing and homeless legislation.
- Support the housing advice team leaders in project work as required to improve our service to customers.
- Meet challenging targets in relation to the quantity and quality of casework.
- To liaise effectively with registered providers, social care and partner agencies to promote the best interests of our customers.
- Draft written responses to MP and councillor enquiries and respond to Freedom of Information requests.
- to undertake home visits when required.
- to represent the housing needs team at internal and external meetings.
- to maintain accurate case records and assist in the compilation of relevant statistics, reports and information.
- to acquire and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of homelessness and housing legislation, as well as any relevant local or national policies or initiatives.
- to participate in the out of office hours rota for emergency homeless presentations.
- Any other duties relevant to the position and appropriate to the grading of the post.
Your essential skills, knowledge and experience
- a comprehensive knowledge of housing legislation and tenancy law
- a track record of case management
- ability to use IT systems including Excel
- excellent oral and written communication skills
- ability to participate in our out of hours service
- experience of dealing with vulnerable people and people who are distressed
Your essential qualifications
- a degree, equivalent professional housing qualification, or 3 years’ experience of working in a housing environment or with vulnerable households at risk of homelessness
- full and current driving licence and use of car for business purposes
If you have the following experience or qualification - it’s a bonus
- membership of CIH
- familiarity with the district
- knowledge of Abritas, the housing database
- local government experience
