Head of Workforce

We are looking for a highly qualified and outstanding individual to join the core team of Surgery & Cancer Board as Head of Workforce. This permanent appointment will combine clinical board Head of Workforce responsibilities with senior leadership of the Trusts Employee Relations function.
As a distinctive, passionate, and experienced leader with outstanding interpersonal skills you will help us fulfil our aspiration to make day-to-day contributions that improve patient care as well as informing UCLH’s and future NHS strategies that forecast and meet future challenges for our staff and the services our patients need.
Reporting to the Medical Director, with professional accountability to the Workforce
Director, the Head of Workforce will be responsible for developing and delivering the clinical board's workforce plans, within the framework of the overall Trust strategy.
The post holder will provide oversight and leadership to the Employee Relations service to enable the delivery of safe cost-effective clinical services to patients.
The Head of Workforce will be a key member of the clinical board’s core team and the Senior Workforce Team.
The Head of Workforce will assure strong local delivery across the clinical board of a select group of annual priorities for workforce and will also lead on corporate priorities on behalf of the Director of Workforce.
They will work closely with the Workforce Director and each member of the workforce team to assure coherent plans and action are in place to secure the delivery of each annual priority.

The Head of Workforce has direct responsibility for leading the clinical boards HR and Employee Relations teams and the associated pay and non-pay budgets.

It has world class support services including critical care, imaging, nuclear medicine and pathology.
Team Responsibilities
- Responsible for the management and development of the HRBP’s within the clinical board
- Budget holder for the Clinical Board HR
- Responsible for the Employee Relations team reporting directly to the Director of Workforce for this service
Workforce Strategy development and implementation
- Develop and implement the Trust and Board plans to ensure the development and provision of workforce that is fit for purpose, providing compassionate care, responsive to evolving business needs, and delivers real productivity improvements.
- Contribute to the development of new models of working to meet current and future business needs looking at skill mix, role redesign and new ways of working.
- In conjunction with the Medical Director, ensure a strategic approach to the delivery of medical workforce and development.
- In conjunction with the Deputy Director of Workforce ensure a strategic and user focused approach to the delivery of employee relations
Leadership and Talent Development
- In line with the Trust leadership strategy, support the development of management and leadership capability of all staff with line management responsibilities. Lead the development and implementation of the Clinical Board’s approach to talent management and succession planning, in line with overall Trust plans, ensuring that individuals are attracted, developed and retained in appropriate and evolving roles within the organisation.
- Lead on development of leadership learning events and workshops relevant to the Clinical Board and workshops, delivering content as appropriate.
- Lead on the development of local orientation arrangements that complement corporate recruitment arrangements.
