Hammersmith and Fulham Council declared a climate and ecological emergency in summer 2019 and have set an ambitious target for net zero carbon emissions for the whole borough by 2030. Only 10% of the borough’s emissions are from activities of the Council itself. The Climate Engagement Officer will support the Climate Engagement Lead to help reach a reduction to net-zero for the other 90% of emissions that are outside of the council’s direct control.

The postholder will work with the Climate Engagement Lead to extend Hammersmith & Fulham’s ability to enable and inspire residents of the borough to take collective action that promotes ‘climate-friendly’ behaviours. The postholder will promote existing and future Council schemes that support this and will work with colleagues in the Council to help them facilitate action that residents can take to reduce carbon emissions, make space for nature, and reduce flood risk/exposure to extreme heat.

**Role Responsibilities**:

You will need to:

- Be confident in conversing about the climate crisis with residents of different backgrounds and have a good knowledge of local climate issues and the actions, solutions and behaviours required to reach net-zero by 2030. You’ll promote these through a mixture of good writing, presentations and personal interactions.
- Be out and about facilitating conversations, building stronger connections and understanding between the council and different parts of society (e.g. young people, residents’ associations, housing providers, faith groups, the health sector, activist groups, and individuals), as well as connecting these groups with each other, and ensure that the Climate Unit understands their aspirations and needs regarding climate change.
- Lead Hammersmith & Fulham’s climate pitch at public fairs, community events, and elsewhere to increase interaction with the public and provide opportunities for them to become more closely involved in climate action - not only through our programmes but also on their own initiative and with other interested residents.
- Organise and manage events and meetings to engage people and ensure the views of all residents, including young people, are represented in strategy development, decision-making and policy formation.
