The Priory Hospital Middleton St George is located close to Darlington, County Durham and provides individualised treatment and care for people with mental health needs of adults who present with complex and challenging behaviours, in a safe and supportive environment. Our comprehensive integrated services offer complete care pathways allowing service users to transfer effortlessly between the most appropriate care, meeting individual needs enabling recovery and re-engagement within the community and maximising life opportunities.

Our multi-disciplinary teams provide care for up to 110 male and female service users, working collaboratively with their commissioners, across our 8 wards and our nearby community house. Our focus is on the delivery of excellent care, empowering service users to progress towards the least restrictive setting and towards independence. Our vision is to place our Service Users at the heart of our service provision, working closely with them and their carers to support their recovery and rehabilitation.

1. Working with the Regional Mental Health Law Lead, manage the efficient administration of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and prioritise the workflow and capacity of the team to meet constantly changing demands.
2. Ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act and associated legislation and provide senior support and advice to staff, service users and relatives on the MHA 1983 and associated procedures.
3. Coordinate with MHA Administrator’s to ensure quality and governance for hospitals
4. Coordinating MHA administration groups, supporting a network of practice and engaging with the Senior MHA Administrators meetings
5. Helping to support and cascade legislation and policy change relating to the MHA, and identifying implementation plans to support new policies and procedures as required
6. Provide MHA training for sites and staff, as part of the division’s mandatory training and to respond to any requests or emerging issues or new practice and policy requirements.
7. Provide support to MHA administrator’s where required, and work with the Regional Mental Health Law Lead to ensure there is provision of cover when required and as agreed.
8. Lead and coordinate MHA quality reviews for sites, including action to address MHA action points following CQC Inspection reports following visits to clinical areas by the CQC
9. Escalate and report breaches, areas of concern and poor practice in line with Divisional protocol using Priory systems and produce reports to the hospital Clinical Governance Committee, MHA managers meeting etc. as required.
10. Act in the capacity of audit facilitator regarding any local or divisional clinical audits on the MHA.
Mental Health Act Administration Responsibilities
12. Maintain accurate data in relation to the use of the Act in order to provide statistical information for national and local reporting processes.
13. Support the service in any administration related to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards where required and identify and escalate any issues
14. Receive and scrutinise statutory documentation; ensure that errors are rectified within the legal timescale; be responsible for identifying an invalidating error and following documented procedures after consultation with the Hospital Director/Director of Clinical Services and Regional Mental Health Law Lead.
15. Provide information to Service Users and their nearest relatives under section 132 of the MHA.
16. Provide information to qualifying patients in relation to their right to access Independent Mental Health Advocacy Services (IMHA) under section 132D.
17. Monitor, remind and record changes in legal status and appropriate documentation. Informing Consultants and nursing colleagues of legal requirements relating to detained patients i.e. renewal of sections, consent to treatment etc.
18. Be responsible for the efficient and effective processing of hearings in relation to MH tribunals and Hospital Directors review, ensuring all relevant parties are notified, reports have been obtained and helping to negotiate hearing dates and venues, providing and processing documentation in accordance with the MHA Code of Practice and Divisional Policies and procedures.
19. Ensure supplies of MHA documentation, statutory and in house, are available for clinicians, service users and their nearest relatives.
