Internal Communications Officer

Kendal, United Kingdom University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Full time

As our Communications Officer, you will be an enthusiastic communicator who is passionate about getting to the real story. This role will see you taking the lead for the internal communications to our 8,000+ colleagues across our hospitals and in the community.

You will be the ‘go to’ person for colleagues to come to with their developments, events and good news stories and it will be your responsibility to make sure everyone knows what’s going on, using every method possible.

As well as being the lead for our internal communications, this role also works closely with the wider Corporate Communications team to proactively share news and developments from across the Trust and respond to media enquiries.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys jumping in with two feet and spotting the story. You will need to be a team player who will genuinely enjoy being face-to-face with colleagues and patients to develop good, professional working relationships. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about improving the experience of our patients and colleagues by delivering interesting, engaging and relevant communications.

This is your chance to make a difference with an employer who wants to be a leader in the field of healthcare communications, not a follower.

Champion internal communications and provide a high standard of advice and guidance to colleagues

Lead on specific campaigns and produce creative and innovative ideas and solutions to delivering the message. This may include the formal briefing of design / external communication agencies

Lead on the planning, production and distribution of regular internal communications mechanisms, such as the Trust’s weekly staff newsletter (Weekly News), CEO briefings, and the monthly Team Talk for colleagues

Provide copy writing, editing and design assistance for Trust produced materials. This may require the use of specialist software packages such as Adobe Acrobat Professional and Adobe

When requested, take an active part in managing communications for events and other external communication activities.

Support the wider team in all other areas of communications activities where required, including media relations

Maintain confidentiality in relation to sensitive matters being dealt within the communications department and shows respect and understanding when communicating (in all forms)

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

The Communications Team at UHMBT plays a key role in managing the Trust’s reputation and communicating and engaging with stakeholders. It works in a busy and challenging environment, and is responsible for internal and external communications, including stakeholder management, media and social media relations, crisis and issues management, public awareness campaigns, and the management of corporate identity, staff communications, and online communications.

The Internal Communications Officer will embed a proactive approach to communications, seeking to engage external and internal stakeholders in two-way communications, promoting UHMBT’s achievements and values.

This role will be the team’s lead for internal communications but will also play a key role in supporting the team’s other communications activities, including media relations.

The development and delivery of communications plans and project based assignments to support UHMBT’s activities is an essential part of this role.

**KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS**:
The Communications Officer will liaise with diverse audiences and stakeholders, including the media, Trust staff, patients, their families and representatives, Staff Side representatives, Overview and Scrutiny Committees, NHS England / NHS Improvement, MPs, charity and community groups, and the general public.

MAIN DUTIES

**The post holder will**:
Champion internal communications and provide a high standard of advice and guidance to colleagues.

Support the wider team in all other areas of communications activities where required, including media relations.

Proactively seek out opportunities and
