The Role

This post sits within a core facility team of dedicated electron microscopists who support teaching, research, and development within the faculty of medical sciences, as well as the wider University and our external clients. Our technical specialists perform essential roles supporting and enabling both students and staff in one-to-one and whole group settings, maintaining and developing a range of electron microscopes and sample preparation equipment, and working with industrial or commercial partners.

You will be central to supporting and maintaining the services provided by the Electron Microscopy Research Services core facility. The role will involve providing scientific and technical service to customers, training and advice on microscopes, software and technologies. There will also be a requirement to perform routine lab and equipment maintenance tasks.

This is a full time, permanant post,with a 3 month probation period.

Key Accountabilities
Service Delivery
- To provide a biological EM service from sample preparation to imaging on electron microscope
- To process samples for scanning, Volume EM and transmission EM using specified protocols
- Imaging using electron microscopes and image data analysis
- To undertake all laboratory procedures according to COSHH regulations using Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- To provide advice and guidance in all aspects of biological Electron Microscopy to a wide range of staff, students and commercial users. (E.g. advising on experimental design and the validation of results etc)
- To support staff/students/customers carrying out Electron Microscopy investigations. To assess their requirements, conduct an analysis of the information and make appropriate recommendations. To help academics interpret and analyse research outputs from Electron Microscopy Research Services and make recommendations for future research directions
- Attendance at and involvement with expert academic user groups
- Maintain a high level of up-to-date specialist knowledge of Electron Microscopy by reading relevant journals and participating in relevant conferences
- To support the Senior ESO in making strategic decisions on purchases and upgrades to place the Electron Microscopy Research Services at the forefront of these techniques
- To be involved in developing enterprise opportunities and helping to maintain already established links with national and internationally recognised companies/ organisations
- To support undergraduate and Mres Projects
- To assist PIs on developing grant proposals for research bids, contributing to writing technical reports and contributing to research papers for publication

Equipment and Facility Maintenance
- To support the Senior ESO to ensure that the laboratory and its equipment are maintained in a fit operational state including regular provision of operator routine maintenance and liaison with service engineers
- With Senior ESO regularly review service support structures and administrative requirements, including designing and delivering support mechanisms to maximise service quality, efficiency and continuity
- To support the quality assurance processes within the unit
- Provide troubleshooting to the equipment and software as and when required
- Identify equipment failures and report these to the SESO
- Participate in facility quality control procedures
- Ensure the laboratory environment is fit for purpose. Liaise with the SESO as well as service providers to maintain a clean, safe and tidy environment
- Monitoring of lab resources
- Data management for safe and efficient data storage

Administration
- Administer booking and time management of all facility resources together with the SESO
- Create and attend User Group meetings
- Record keeping, including quality control and user training logs
- Maintenance of PPMS booking system together with the SESO

Teaching and Training
- Provide comprehensive training on all microscopy resources
- Provide both basic and advanced training to undergraduates, Mres students and researchers in image analysis and image reconstruction for volume EM
- Provide training to research scientists on all equipment and technologies housed within the facility (1:1 training as well as giving group-training courses) together with the Facility Head

Other duties
- Liaise with colleagues and students and external companies
- Maintain links with specialist national and international networks in Electron Microscopy including membership of any relevant professional bodies
- Maintain an up-to-date specialist knowledge of Electron Microscopy including through subscriptions to specialist jour
