**Job summary**:
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for improving and protecting the environment. We aim to grow a green economy and sustain thriving rural communities. We also support our world-leading food, farming and fishing industries. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink. The environment, food production, and farming practices increasingly occupy centre stage in public and policy debates.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Central Science Division to join a friendly, supportive and flexible team who play a lead role in ensuring that Defra is able to put science at the heart of our policy making and delivery.

You will be part of a small team that is responsible for Defra Science Strategy. The Science Strategy Team sits within the Central Science Division which is one of four divisions within the Defra Science and Analysis Group, overseen by the Defra Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). The Central Science Division comprises c.60 specialist and non-specialist staff engaged in strategic science activities to support Defra policy and operations.

The Science Strategy Team is responsible for developing our overarching Research and Development (R&D) Strategy and managing our Defra Group Research and Innovation Interests. We also coordinate science and analysis governance, including operating the Group Evidence, Science and Analysis Committee (GESAC) and Public Sector Research Establishment (PSRE) Science group, coordinating the management of cross-cutting science and analysis activities and risks across the Defra Group. We also manage the Defra Group Science System, coordinate engagement between CSA and the network of Defra Lead Scientists, ensure Defra interests are reflected in emerging cross-cutting activities and strategies, and develop opportunities to improve the quality and use of scientific evidence and advice across the department.

As one of two SEOs in the Science Strategy Team you will work closely with the team leader and wider team, working flexibly across our projects depending on priorities.

**Job description**:
The post holder will lead the development, management and delivery of projects and workstreams within the Science Strategy Team.

These include:

- An R&D Review looking at the R&D that Defra will need to address our key future policy challenges;
- Supporting Transformation work to ensure that the Defra Group science system operates effectively, including, between core Defra and its Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs).

You will also be responsible for developing a network of contacts, both internal and external, to identify areas for collaboration and to secure expertise and input to the teams workstreams and to ensure that our work is supported by and communicated to a wide range of stakeholders. This is a high profile opportunity to engage at a senior level, reporting to the CSA and deputy CSA, and engaging with senior scientists across core Defra and our PSREs. It is also an excellent opportunity to broaden understanding of the Defra Group science system.

**Person specification**:
Essential Criteria:

- Knowledge and experience of how science and evidence are used across government and the role of R&D in policymaking and delivery;
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), proficient at engaging with science and non-science colleagues at all levels with a strong ability to persuade and influence others.
- Ability to communicate technical information to a non-specialist audience.
- Experience working with senior level stakeholders, including the scientific community, to agree and deliver shared objectives.
- Strong leadership skills, including managing relationships with delivery partners and handling complex sensitivities.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong project and programme management skills, including experience of managing and delivering projects from start to finish; shaping, planning and driving forward work; and developing and maintaining collaborative relationships to deliver a broad portfolio of tasks.
