**Job summary**:
Alongside climate change and biodiversity loss, pollution is the third planetary crisis that we face. There is estimated to be around 350,000 chemicals on the market globally and by 2030 this global industry will double in size. Effective management of chemicals is required to ensure that society benefits from these chemicals and any harmful effects on biodiversity, environmental quality and human health are minimised. Chemicals do not respect borders: they move through environmental processes, via trade, and within products and wastes. This requires an international response.

The role sits in the Chemicals Hub, within the Chemicals, Pesticides and Hazardous Waste division within Defra. We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist with a strong understanding of chemical toxicity in the environment to work at the science-policy interface. The role will involve translating science to policy and harnessing the UK’s expert scientific community to further the development of internationally accepted tools and guidance to assess and manage chemical risk more effectively.

**Job description**:
**In this role you will**:

- Support the OECD Test Guidelines Programme within the Environment Health and Safety Programme (EHS). You will co-ordinate UK research and development activity by partners across government, industry and academia contributing to development of internationally accepted tools, analysis, and guidance on chemicals management available to policymakers and regulators in the UK and globally.
- Provide scientific and coordination support on the wider EHS programme.
- Act as the Chemical Hub’s scientific lead and policy liaison on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) - innovative methods for chemical testing - working across Whitehall to coordinate policy and scientific input to Defra-led chemicals policy.
- Use your scientific background to provide cross-cutting scientific support to multidisciplinary policy teams across the Chemicals Hub and the wider Chemical Pesticides and Hazardous Waste (CPHW) division.
- Engage with multiple stakeholders and act as a science-policy interface to facilitate two-way dialogue between the UK’s research community and policy teams.
- Represent Defra at relevant committees, meetings, and conferences.

**Person specification**:

- Communicate science in a clear and understandable manner to non-specialists within a policy context, including effectively communicating uncertainty.
- Develop an understanding of international regulatory frameworks, initiatives and the role of multilateral organisations in meeting the global chemicals challenge as well as the UK’s domestic policy. Remain alert to emerging issues and be capable of identifying and grasping opportunities for UK science and expertise to be showcased and applied to drive the domestic policymaking.
- Develop and maintain their own positive, well respected and influential scientific reputation across government and externally, including in the international context when representing Defra or the UK.
- Network and build solid links with scientists and officials to support our work.
- Be willing to travel for work - sometimes long distance - to represent Defra and/or the UK.

**Essential Criteria**:

- Education to Degree-level or higher in a relevant science or engineering field.
- Strong knowledge of chemical pollution and its risks to the environment and/or human health.
- Proven ability to network and build collaborative partnerships.
- Ability to quickly gather knowledge on unfamiliar scientific topics.
- Ability to deliver work at pace to meet challenging deadlines.
- Experience developing, planning and carrying out scientific research studies and drafting scientific/technical papers.
- Strong project management skills.

New joiners can expect full support from the Government Science and Engineering Profession, including in their career development, through peer learning, mentoring and coaching as well as access to a wide range of material and professional advice to support them in their roles.

**Qualifications**:

- Degree in a relevant science or engineering field**Behaviours**:
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:
